Top Hair Removal Products 2013 (razors, epilators and waxing kits)

We humans have been concerned with hair-removal for thousands of years. The Ancient Egyptians, for example, used razors made of flint and bronze, and a method of depilatory called sugaring which is similar to modern-day waxing.

Thankfully hair-removal tools have developed a fair bit since then, but given the amount of choice there is on the market it can sometimes be difficult to know which products to choose. Which is why I’ve put together a list of five great hair-removal tools!

All of the following have been tried and tested by yours truly (yes, even the painful ones) so you’ll only be getting my honest opinion…

1. Venus ProSkin Sensitive

As someone with very sensitive skin, I know how much of a nightmare shaving can be. De-fuzzing is a pain at the best of times, but when it’s followed by days of painful skin irritations which leave you slapping on sudocrem and talcum powder a la Ross and the leather pants scenario in Friends, that’s when shaving becomes particularly annoying.

Which is why I was pleasantly surprised and genuinely impressed when I used Venus’ ProSkin Senstive razor. It caused me absolutely no irritation, even in sensitive areas such as my underarms and bikini line, and left my legs feeling super silky! The razor has five separate yet closely-positioned blades and comes with a showerpod. Available to buy from Boots for £9.99.

2. Wilkinson Sword Hydro Silk Razor

Equally good is Wilkinson Sword’s Hydro Silk Razor. After using this razor I noticed that my skin was soft and free of irritation, and remained that way for days. The razor has water-activated moisturising serum containing shea butter and marine extract and is the only razor to moisturize your skin for up to two hours after use, which probably explains the calming effect it had on my skin.

The razor has five “curve-sensing” blades which ensure a close shave, and the skin guards reduce the risk of cutting your skin. The razor usually costs £9.99, although the price has recently been slashed (no pun intended) to £4.99 at Boots. Venus’s ProSkin Sensitive Razor and Wilkinson Sword’s Hydro Silk Razor are two of the best razors I’ve ever used, and that’s no exaggeration!

3. Braun Silk Epil 7

I won’t lie to you, this epilator isn’t painless, but boy does it do the job. The epilator head contains forty tweezers and comes with a variety of different caps (I realize I’m making it sound like a torture device, but read on). The caps are suitable for different bodyparts including your bikini line, underarms, face and legs. The product also comes with a shaver head so you can use it as a fully-fledged dry shaver!

The epilator is brilliant at removing the absolute shortest of hairs (as little as 0.5mm) and can be used both in dry and wet conditions. You can even use it under running water! It has a high-frequency massage system, a smartlight to illuminate the finest of hairs, and a pivoting feature which adapts to your body contours. Using the epilator is a bit painful at first as your skin is particularly sensitive, but the more you use it the less it hurts. Available from Boots for £129.99.

4. JML Beauty Wand

Small, compact and effective, the JML Beauty Wand will make a handy little addition to your handbag for any on-the-go hair emergencies. The JML Beauty Wand does a great job of trimming straggly brows, furry fingers, hobbit toes or an untamed tash! It has a built-in LED light, an angled head and comes in a soft black pouch. Available to buy from jmldirect.com for £9.99.

5. Veet EasyWax Electrical Roll On

Home-waxing kits are messy and often ineffective, however Veet’s electrical Roll On is tidier than your average kit and actually mimics salon results! The kit includes one roll on applicator, waxing strips, wipes, one charger, one dock and a refillable cartridge of wax which is suitable for sensitive skin as it’s formulated with beeswax. As mentioned previously, my skin is sensitive, but I experienced no irritation after using the roll on.

The instruction leaflet recommends you heat the cartridge for 20 minutes before use, but I found it took closer to 45 minutes. However, after the wax heated up, the applicator was easy to use. The wax itself was far less sticky than I expected, and ripping the strips off wasn’t half as painful as I’d imagined! In fact, the actual waxing process was relatively pain-free, and unlike cold waxing kits (which often leave residue behind) all of the Veet wax came off – and took my leg hair with it! This is the best home-waxing kit I’ve tried to date, which is why I’d say it’s worth its £29.99 price tag.
