Billion Dollar Brows

Cecil Beaton said of Marlene Dietrich, ‘Instead of eyebrows, she has limned butterflies’ antennae on her forehead.’ It’s common knowledge that eyebrows frame the face, so if you want perfect arches like Dietrich’s, then maintenance is key.

As someone who’s been endowed with a pair of big ‘uns (eyebrows that is), I know how challenging taming unruly brows can be. Sure it’s not fire-fighting or climbing Everest, but the constant battle against bushy brows can be a difficult one.

Which is why I’m a massive fan of the Billion Dollar Brows range, in particular their stainless steel tweezers. Billion Dollar Brows’ specially coated tweezers are slim, solid, and enable you to shape your eyebrows with precision and ease. They’re also brilliant at yanking out short hairs!

Billion Dollar Brows

Billion Dollar Brows Tweezers, Brow Gel and Brow Duo Pencil

I can’t get enough of their Brow Gel either. It’s a great tool for moulding your brows into the shape you want and gives your eyebrows a soft, polished and groomed look that lasts for hours. The gel has a lovely texture too which makes your brows look glossy rather than crusty!

Another favourite of mine from the range is the Brow Duo Pencil which you can use to further define your eyebrow area. The highlighter accentuates your browbone and the concealer is great at covering skin blemishes or tiny hairs that are just too short to tweeze.

Try out some products from Billion Dollar Brows and you’ll soon have eyebrows to rival Jane Russell’s… or even Marlene Dietrich’s! Available to buy from billiondollarbrows-uk.com.

LCN Sensitive Guard Nail Whitener

Marilyn Monroe preferred to wear clear nail polish, and who could blame her? Clear polish is a lovely way to give your nails a subtle, elegant finish. It’s glamorous without being gaudy, and understated without being dull.

My go-to nail polish at the moment is LCN’s Sensitive Guard Nail Whitener. Just one, thin layer of this polish brightens your nails and gives them a healthy sheen. Make sure not to apply too much though as it’ll end up looking milky and congealed. Remember, less is more!

LCN’s Sensitive Guard Nail Whitener contains green tea extract and can also be used as a base coat. Available to buy for £4.35 from beautyconcepts.co.uk.

Good for the SOLE! Treat your Feet with these Pampering Products

Ridding your feet of calloused skin is the most gross yet satisfying activity EVER! If you fancy treating your feet to a home pampering session, I recommend using either the PediPro Deluxe by JML or the MicroPedi by Emjoi.

PediPro Deluxe

PediPro Deluxe by JML

The PediPro Deluxe, which costs £19.99 from JMLdirect.co.uk, is a relatively small electronic device whose curvy design and cute, rubbery pink hide make it comfortable to hold. The device comes with a soft pink carry pouch, a cleaning brush, buffing pads and two different heads including a stainless steel blade and a buffing disc. The latter is designed to create a ‘flawless finish’, and I have to say it does a brilliant job of smoothing out rough, tough and stubborn skin.

However, given it’s so effective, it’s important you don’t use the buffing disc for too long otherwise your skin will become raw and tender. To make sure you don’t overdo it, the PediPro Deluxe has three different speed settings, so you can always switch it to the lowest one. If you do end up over-buffing, dab a little bit of Carnation’s Cracked Heel Cream onto affected areas. It only costs £3.05 from firstaidfast.co.uk and contains refreshing peppermint.

PediPro Deluxe buffer and metal plate

PediPro Deluxe buffer and metal plate

While the PediPro Deluxe is good, I much prefer the MicroPedi by Emjoi. Available for £39.99 from Boots, the MicroPedi is a little steep but definitely worth it. It’s true that the PediPro Deluxe is less messy as it contains a built-in storage tray, but I must admit I get a kick out of seeing how much dead skin the MicroPedi gets rid of! Don’t judge me. It’s amazing. Although I do realize I sound like Goldmember from Austin Powers (“Datsh a keeper!”).

Anyway, the MicroPedi only requires two batteries, and its light body and ergonomically designed handle means it’s really easy to use and is also very portable. The MicroPedi boasts a unique, micro mineral roller which spins at 360º at an amazing 30 times a second! With consistent use, the MicroPedi smooths your soles and leaves your skin feeling super soft. Unlike scrubbing your feet with a pumice stone, using the MicroPedi isn’t a chore, and all you need to do is lightly glide the roller across the surface of your feet for it to do its job.

To keep your feet in soft condition, I suggest using a Foot Scrub once a week. Carnation’s Exfoliating Foot Scrub costs just £3.36 and contains an envigorating mix of apricot seed, walnut shell and mineral oil. After treating your feet with JML’s PediPro Deluxe or the MicroPedi by Emjoi, make sure you pop your feet into a pair of comfy slippers like the Chinese-inspired bad boys below, designed by iconic international designer Vivienne Tam. The sensation of soft skin nuzzling into plush material will make your feet feel brand spanking new!

Bath Products for a Relaxing Night In

In the folklore of India and the Orient, the scented bath has been used to attract good spirits, new lovers and to obtain and preserve happiness. Whether you believe in that or not, there’s no denying that a nice bath can lift your spirits, be a great way to relax with your lover, and has the ability to make you feel calm and happy.

The joy of soaking in a hot tub is further heightened when bath salts are thrown into the mix. My favourite kind at the moment are the Dead Sea Aromatherapy Bath Salts, which include frankincense and rose petals. These bath salts have a delicious aroma and make for a truly invigorating bathing experience. I used the salts while I had the flu and felt my chest felt much clearer afterwards! Available for £6.59 from Boots.

Dead Sea Aromatherapy Bath Salts

Dead Sea Aromatherapy Bath Salts

During Tudor Times, Mary Queen of Scots bathed in wine, and while it’s probably not advisable to bathe in a tub of merlot these days, you can still emulate old Mary by adding a cup of cider or wine vinegar to your bath as it helps soothe dry skin. Just avoid adding any other spirits, otherwise you’ll bring a whole new meaning to the term gin-soaked.

Speaking of boozy bathing, in 2012 The Cadogan Hotel in London launched its Champagne Bath Menu which invites uber-rich guests to submerge themselves in 84 litres of champagne. Yummy! Forget bubble baths, a bath of bubbly sounds far more luxurious.

Having said that, the price ranges from £4,000 to £25,000 per bath depending on the amount and brand of champagne used. So, unless you have wads of money to burn, a champagne bath is probably off the menu.

In which case I recommend replacing Dom Pérignon Vintage with Forever’s Relaxation Bath Salts which include Lavender, Dead Sea Salt and other essential oils to soften your skin. Follow up with Forever’s Relaxation Massage Lotion to complete your relaxing bathing experience. Both products can be bought separately or as part of Forever’s Aroma Spa Collection from foreverliving.com.

Forever Aroma Spa Kit

Forever Aroma Spa Kit

Another nice bath product is Rejuvenate Bath Oil by BFAromatherapy. Part of the SplashTherapy range, the product contains Sweet Almond Oil and pure essential oils of Geranium, Juniperberry, Lime, Rosemary and Peppermint. Available from bfaromatherapy.com for £15.00. And while you’re zenning out in the tub, why not apply a face mask? Cosmecology Paris’ Mask Hydra contains sweet-smelling raspberry extract and, after leaving on for ten minutes, makes your skin look radiant and luminous.

You can also make your own scented bath using home ingredients; just add a few drops of perfume and unfragranced baby oil, or alternatively you can add a cup of powdered skimmed milk to your bath. It’s said that Cleopatra enjoyed the softening and whitening properties of milk. Well, if it’s good enough for a pharaoh…

However you decide to bathe, try and take some time out to relax in the tub this month. Lock the bathroom door, grab a good book, light a scented candle, and let your anxieties melt away. Sure, you’ll be a bathing cliché, but you’ll look and feel so much better for it!

Top Hair Removal Products 2013 (razors, epilators and waxing kits)

We humans have been concerned with hair-removal for thousands of years. The Ancient Egyptians, for example, used razors made of flint and bronze, and a method of depilatory called sugaring which is similar to modern-day waxing.

Thankfully hair-removal tools have developed a fair bit since then, but given the amount of choice there is on the market it can sometimes be difficult to know which products to choose. Which is why I’ve put together a list of five great hair-removal tools!

All of the following have been tried and tested by yours truly (yes, even the painful ones) so you’ll only be getting my honest opinion…

Ancient Egyptians also shaved and waxed! (image: sheknows.com)

1. Venus ProSkin Sensitive

As someone with very sensitive skin, I know how much of a nightmare shaving can be. De-fuzzing is a pain at the best of times, but when it’s followed by days of painful skin irritations which leave you slapping on sudocrem and talcum powder a la Ross and the leather pants scenario in Friends, that’s when shaving becomes particularly annoying.

Which is why I was pleasantly surprised and genuinely impressed when I used Venus’ ProSkin Senstive razor. It caused me absolutely no irritation, even in sensitive areas such as my underarms and bikini line, and left my legs feeling super silky! The razor has five separate yet closely-positioned blades and comes with a showerpod. Available to buy from Boots for £9.99.

2. Wilkinson Sword Hydro Silk Razor

Equally good is Wilkinson Sword’s Hydro Silk Razor. After using this razor I noticed that my skin was soft and free of irritation, and remained that way for days. The razor has water-activated moisturising serum containing shea butter and marine extract and is the only razor to moisturize your skin for up to two hours after use, which probably explains the calming effect it had on my skin.

The razor has five “curve-sensing” blades which ensure a close shave, and the skin guards reduce the risk of cutting your skin. The razor usually costs £9.99, although the price has recently been slashed (no pun intended) to £4.99 at Boots. Venus’s ProSkin Sensitive Razor and Wilkinson Sword’s Hydro Silk Razor are two of the best razors I’ve ever used, and that’s no exaggeration!

3. Braun Silk Epil 7

I won’t lie to you, this epilator isn’t painless, but boy does it do the job. The epilator head contains forty tweezers and comes with a variety of different caps (I realize I’m making it sound like a torture device, but read on). The caps are suitable for different bodyparts including your bikini line, underarms, face and legs. The product also comes with a shaver head so you can use it as a fully-fledged dry shaver!

Braun Silk Epil 7

The epilator is brilliant at removing the absolute shortest of hairs (as little as 0.5mm) and can be used both in dry and wet conditions. You can even use it under running water! It has a high-frequency massage system, a smartlight to illuminate the finest of hairs, and a pivoting feature which adapts to your body contours. Using the epilator is a bit painful at first as your skin is particularly sensitive, but the more you use it the less it hurts. Available from Boots for £129.99.

4. JML Beauty Wand

Small, compact and effective, the JML Beauty Wand will make a handy little addition to your handbag for any on-the-go hair emergencies. The JML Beauty Wand does a great job of trimming straggly brows, furry fingers, hobbit toes or an untamed tash! It has a built-in LED light, an angled head and comes in a soft black pouch. Available to buy from jmldirect.com for £9.99.

5. Veet EasyWax Electrical Roll On

Home-waxing kits are messy and often ineffective, however Veet’s electrical Roll On is tidier than your average kit and actually mimics salon results! The kit includes one roll on applicator, waxing strips, wipes, one charger, one dock and a refillable cartridge of wax which is suitable for sensitive skin as it’s formulated with beeswax. As mentioned previously, my skin is sensitive, but I experienced no irritation after using the roll on.

Veet EasyWax Electrical Roll On

Veet EasyWax Electrical Roll On

The instruction leaflet recommends you heat the cartridge for 20 minutes before use, but I found it took closer to 45 minutes. However, after the wax heated up, the applicator was easy to use. The wax itself was far less sticky than I expected, and ripping the strips off wasn’t half as painful as I’d imagined! In fact, the actual waxing process was relatively pain-free, and unlike cold waxing kits (which often leave residue behind) all of the Veet wax came off – and took my leg hair with it! This is the best home-waxing kit I’ve tried to date, which is why I’d say it’s worth its £29.99 price tag.

Limited Edition Pink Glitter Nails by Elegant Touch (Review)

If you want a quick and easy way to make your hands look party-perfect, then I suggest you purchase some false nails by Elegant Touch, in particular their Limited Edition Pink Glitter Nails.

Glittery pink nails may sound horrendous on paper, but while this design is “girly” it somehow isn’t garish. The pink hue is pretty and the glittery effect adds a subtle sparkle to your fingertips.

It’s true that fake nails can often resemble talons, however these nails are short in length and have a nice shape, meaning they look both realistic and sophisticated. And, rather than glue, the set comes with super adhesive tabs which keep the nails firmly in place.

My advice? Get your claws into this Limited Edition set while you can! Available to buy from Boots for £7.10.

Razzle Dazzle ‘em with the Sparkler set by Frontcover Cosmetics

If you thought glitter was the domain of five year old girls or adults with a fetish for fairy dust, then think again. Sparkly stuff has become de rigieur of late, and if applied correctly, glittery makeup can transform your look from dull to dazzling in no time.

After all, when it comes to a snazzy party, a retro disco or a big night out, average-looking makeup just doesn’t cut it anymore. So, if you have a glitzy event to attend, I suggest you try out Sparkler by Frontcover Cosmetics.

Sparkler Set by Frontcover Cosmetics

Sparkler Set by Frontcover Cosmetics

The set includes a tube of iridescent glitter gel, a double ended brush and three small pots containing black glitter, gold glitter and gold sequins. The materials are easy to apply and the lilac-hued gel has a nice consistency; not too sticky, but it holds the materials firmly in place.

Frontcover Glitter and Sequins

Frontcover Glitter and Sequins

As is the case with all Frontcover sets, the Sparkler kit is inspired by recent catwalk trends and includes instructions on how to use the products in order to create certain looks. There are three ‘looks’ in total; Mirror Ball, Black Wing and Twinkling Eyes & Nails, but you can experiment to your heart’s content. I certainly did!

The set also includes three shimmery, long-lasting nail varnishes; I like to apply Galaxy Bound to my fingernails followed by a strip of Vinaceous down the centre of each nail for an edgy finish. The Sparkler set is currently reduced from £16 to £11.20 at frontcovercosmetics.com.

Arbonne Comet Cosmetics Collection

It would appear there’s a link between the universe and makeup, or rather, between the cosmos and cosmetics…

The word ‘cosmos’ and the word ‘cosmetics’ both stem from the Greek word kosmos, meaning orderly arrangement or decoration. Perfectly apt, given that makeup is used to decorate and improve the appearance of one’s facial proportions.

After all, clever contouring, careful application and a good choice of colours can enhance and even transform your features. To read more about the cosmos, cosmetics and ‘perfect’ facial proportions, read Yesterface’s article ‘Your Face is your Fortune’.

In the meantime, while we’re on the topic, I’d like to recommend the Comet Cosmetics Collection by Arbonne. The set includes a bold red lipstick named ‘Cosmic Kiss’ and Arbonne’s ‘Starry Night’ Eye Shadow Palette, both of which come in a glittery clutch bag.

Arbonne Comet Cosmetics Collection

Arbonne Comet Cosmetics Collection

Cosmic Kiss is long-lasting, easy to apply with precision, and boasts a rich red hue. The lipstick also has a moisturizing effect thanks to its mango butter and pomegranate extract ingredients, making it perfect for the colder months where chapped lips become a common occurrence.

Arbonne Lipstick

Arbonne Lipstick

The eyeshadow palette contains four shimmery shades: Nightscape, Solar, Stardust, and Meteorite, all of which include cucumber and mallow extracts. The eyeshadows are soft and easy to blend (try mixing the four at once for fun, your eyelids will end up looking like the aurora!) and the palette also includes a built-in mirror – handy for when you’re on the go.

However, while both products are lovely, the piece de resistance of the collection for me personally is the clutch bag. With tiny iridescent sparkles set against a jet-black case, this clutch is glittery without being gaudy. It also boasts four bejewelled finger rings – very on trend! Arbonne’s Comet Cosmetics Collection is available to buy at arbonne.com

Beauty Icon: Eartha Kitt

Yesterface was inspired by my fascination with beauty’s rich history and all its glamorous icons, including singer, actress and cabaret star Eartha Kitt who sang the enduring 1953 Christmas smash hit (and one of my favourite singles of all time) Santa Baby.

Eartha Kitt Santa Baby

Eartha Kitt Santa Baby (image: blackbookmag.com)

From her feline features to her striking name, everything about Eartha Kitt oozed charm, beauty and charisma. Kitt embodied a type of glamour specific to the 50s, where female Hollywood screenstars were feminine, dough-eyed and softly-spoken yet had an abundance of sass, humour and sex appeal too - Marilyn Monroe being an obvious example.

Kitt, who was actually conceived of rape, was of African-American descent on her mother’s side and German on her father’s. She spoke four languages, sang in seven, and was politically outspoken; her anti-war statements were met with extreme divided opinion in America.

Eartha Kitt

Eartha Kitt (image: amalgama-lab.com)

When asked about the Vietnam War at a White House Luncheon, Kitt remarked to President Johnson’s wife: “You send the best of this country off to be shot and maimed. No wonder the kids rebel and take pot.” What a gal. She also became a vocal advocate for homosexual rights and publicly supported same-sex marriage. Cool just does not cover it when it comes to Kitt.

Before marrying, Kitt dated cosmetics magnate Charles Revson, who created and managed Revlon for five decades, and a banking heir (apt choices for someone who sang about wanting sables, yachts and Tiffany decorations). It was also alleged that Kitt had an affair in 1957 with Orson Welles who once called her “the most exciting woman in the world”, but she categorically denied this in a 2001 interview with Vanity Fair.

Eartha Kitt Catwoman

Eartha Kitt as Catwoman (image: pelicansandparrots.com)

Kitt eventually married real estate associate John William Mcdonald, with whom she had her only child, Kitt Mcdonald, but they divorced in 1965 and Kitt went on to have other lovers. During her long and successful career, the self-proclaimed sex kitten played the role of Catwoman and was also the spokesperson for MAC Cosmetics’ Smoke Signals collection in 2007, for which she re-recorded “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”.

Eartha Kitt died from colon cancer on Christmas Day in 2008 at her home in Conneticut, a fitting date perhaps for somebody who sang one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. But while she may be gone, every Christmas when Santa Baby comes on the radio I’m reminded of her unique voice, remarkable character and unforgettable beauty.
