Male Grooming Products for your Brother (Christmas 2012 Gift Guide)

December 25th is fast approaching, so here are some last-minute ideas on which male grooming products to buy for your brother this Christmas - whatever his age may be!

For more suggestions on which cosmetics to buy for your dad, boyfriend, granddad or guy mates, check out the rest of Yesterface’s Male Grooming Gift Guide.

What to buy for…

Your little brother

Pacman Washbag

Chances are your tween brother’s social diary is currently filled with sleepovers and schooltrips, in which case I think the Pacman Washbag would make an amazing gift. The washbag boasts a cute retro design and a fun ‘soap on a rope’ accessory. Available at Sainsburys for £12.

Your teenage brother

Nicky Clarke Hair Clay

If your brother is a hormone-riddled, image-conscious teenage boy, then he might like some “grown-up” hair products to experiment with this Christmas. If so, I recommend getting him Nicky Clarke’s Runway Hold Matte Texturizing Clay.

Nicky Clarke hair wax

The clay, which costs £14, has a neutral smell and is easy to apply. It also has a thick, sticky texture which lasts ages, meaning your brother can experiment to his heart’s content! Just remind him to use sparingly, otherwise he’ll end up looking like Ross Geller from Friends during his wet-head phase.

Superdry Cologne

Another thing which teenage boys are (sometimes overly) concerned with is the way they smell. I vividly recall the days where I’d walk into the 6th form common room and feel as if my nostrils were under attack.

If your little brother is starting to smell like a tub of cheap aftershave, steer him in the right direction this Christmas with more refined scents such as Superdry’s new range of stylish colognes. There are four in total, read on to find out what they are…

Superdry Cologne

Superdry Cologne

1. Superdry Black, a rich mixture of ingredients such as coriander, incense and leather.

2. Superdry Steel, a refreshing fragrance with notes of lime and bergamot.

3. Superdry Blue, a cool mixture of ingredients including pear and moss.

4. Superdry Orange, a spicy scent containing black pepper and frankincense.

Each cologne costs £29.50 per 40ml and £39 per 75ml, and can be bought from a variety of major retailers including House of Fraser, Debenhams, Boots, Superdry and superdry.com.

Topman Washbag

This grey, medium-sized Topman washbag contains two products: a refreshing Bodyspray containing seaweed extract, and a Hair and Body Wash containing angelica root extract. Available at Boots for £15. Perfect for your style-conscious teen brother.

If your older brother seems to live by the mantra ‘work hard, play hard’, then he’ll appreciate Men Expert Hydra Energetic Booster by L’Oreal this Christmas. The product contains Vitamin C, has a zesty scent and feels refreshing when massaged into the skin.

It also has a light, serum-like texture which, as L’Oreal rightly claims, is “non-greasy”, “non-sticky” and “quickly absorbed”. Just a small amount of this stuff immediately perks up dry and tired-looking skin! Currently available from Amazon for only £8.84 (RRP: £14.29).

Fat Face Washbag Gift Set

Maybe you had an unkind nickname for your brother while you two were growing up. Maybe it was fat face. If so, what better present to get him than the Fat Face Washbag Gift Set! The set contains Body Spray, Hair and Body Wash, and a soap on a rope. A lovely gift to buy your brother, even if your nickname for him wasn’t that cruel (or, indeed, that kind). Available to buy at Boots for only £10.

Ted Baker Gift Set

When I think of my granddad (or ‘taid’, as we say in Welsh) I imagine him pottering around in the back garden with his various tools. And if he were still here today, I think he would have loved Ted Baker’s “Made to Measure” Gift Set.

Part of Ted Baker’s “The Right Tools” range, the set includes Hair & Body Wash and Bodyspray, both of which contain an outdoorsy blend of bergamot, sandalwood and musk. The set also has a quirky ruler-shaped soap! So cute. Available to buy at Boots for just £10.

Heat Protection Spray

If your friend often uses hair appliances, then there’s a good chance he’s on the lookout for good heat protection products. Enter Guard by Neal & Wolf, a heat protection spray suitable for all hair types. The spray is light and doesn’t leave any sticky residue. It also has an opulent, musky scent which I absolutely love.

I used the spray just before straightening my hair and received so many compliments afterwards on how silky my mane looked! It fended off the scorching effects of my GHDs and left my hair feeling seriously smooth. The Guard Heat Protection Spray costs £10.95, which may sound a little steep, but it’s definitely worth it.

What to buy him this Christmas… (Male Grooming Gift Guide 2012)

A few decades ago, the average man might have expected to find some Vaseline hair tonic and a bottle of Old Spice aftershave in his Christmas stocking. But as we all know, man has since evolved – and so have male grooming products!

Gone is the cosmetically-challenged male of yesteryear whose vanity case consisted of a few basic items, and in his place now is the 21st century metrosexual, whose washbag is bursting at its stylish seams with more products than a fella from the 50s could have possibly imagined.

Men nowadays are taking an increasing interest in their appearance, and the market for male cosmetics is now vaster and far more varied than it’s ever been. So, this Christmas, why not treat your favourite chaps to some nice male-grooming products?

Decorate your nails this Christmas with Nail Art by NPW

If you want fingernails that twinkle like fairy lights, glitter like tinsel and shimmer like a big fat bauble, then this Christmas I suggest you decorate your fingers with Nail Art!

The Nail Art range boasts a variety of colours, tools, textures and gems, all of which work together to create eye-catching 3D effects that will quite literally make your nails stand out. The full range costs between £2.50 and £9.95, and can be bought from Topshop, Selfridges, River Island, Accessorize, New Look and NPW.

If, like me, you’re a fan of doodling then you’ll delight with the Nail Art Party Pack. The kit contains a sparkly nail file, three glittery nail varnishes with built-in micro-nibs which you can use to design your own patterns, and a GEM WHEEL! (Yes, that actually excites me).

Nail Art Party Pack

Nail Art Party Pack

Using Nail Art reminds me of waking up one Christmas morning when I was a kid to find three pots of sparkly nail varnish in my stocking, with which I then proceeded to decorate my nails in the most garish manner possible. Thankfully that nail varnish has long worn off, but the novelty of painting my nails hasn’t, and if the same is true for you then you’ll love Nail Art products.

As can be seen below, I’ve been experimenting with the Nail Art Party Pack (£9.95), the Nail Art Glam Glitter Pens (£9.95) and the Nail Art Gem Wheel (£2.95). Though I should point out, the pink shade is by OPI (“I’m Indi-a mood for Love”), the caviar effect was created using Lilac Nail Candy by LCN, and beneath the mountain of blue hearts on my index finger is a fab multi-coloured, multi-layered nail lacquer by China Glaze (“It’s a trap-eze!”).

Nail Art OPI China Glaze

Nail Art, OPI, and China Glaze nail products

Despite the less than immaculate finish (in my defence, this was my first go) the Nail Art micro-nibs are really easy to use. I applied the gems with my fingers, but I suggest you use a pair of tweezers as this will ensure precision and reduce potential mess.

Also, as you can probably see, too many jewels can make your nails look gaudy, so use sparingly otherwise it’ll look as if a fairy’s exploded all over your hands. I think the Nail Art Party Pack would make a lovely gift this Christmas for your little sister, your arty friend, or even for yourself! So, what are you waiting for? Get decorating!

Yesterfact: Nail polish originated in China around 3000 BC and it’s thought that people in India started decorating their nails with henna around the same time. There’s also evidence that manicures took place in southern Babylonia as far back as 4000 years ago!

Dr LeWinn’s Radiance Booster: review

Winter is fast approaching and, as we all know, grim weather can play havoc with one’s skin!

Cold temperatures and harsh winds can leave your complexion feeling dry and looking dull, but a good beauty product can help fend off the effects of bad weather, so this year why not pop Dr LeWinn’s Instant Beauty Radiance Booster onto your Christmas list?

This product does exactly what it says on the tin; it brightens your complexion immediately upon application and gives your skin a well-hydrated appearance. Part of Dr LeWinn’s Private Formula range, the radiance booster contains over 70% aloe vera, has a soft texture, and leaves your skin feeling silky smooth.

It can be used alone, as a pre-makeup base or as a masque, and its fresh scent is remniscent of a luxurious bar of soap. At £26 per 50G, this product is packaged in a slim white bottle and – in my opinion – would make a lovely little stocking filler!

Yesterface fact: Dr LeWinn’s was one of the world’s most distinguished plastic surgeons and his skincare range has been named as the Top Performing Premium Skincare brand in Australia for the past eleven years!

All that glitters… dazzling makeup for Bonfire Night!

Remember, remember, the 5th of November… and remember, Guy Fawkes Night is the perfect excuse to wear dazzling make-up!

From sooty eyeshadows to shimmering powders (that’s face powder by the way, not gunpowder) get ready for some Bonfire beauty with these smokin’ hot products…

For toffee-glazed lips, try Mii Shimmering Lip Sheen in Tantalize 05; this sugary-tasting gloss makes your mouth look good enough to eat. Or, create an explosive red pout with MAC’s Marilyn Monroe lipstick in Scarlet Ibis. Its orange hue is bound to give your lips a fiery edge.

Hervana blusher by Benefit (image: benefitcosmetics.com)

Hervana blusher by Benefit (image: benefitcosmetics.com)

Rosy cheeks are synonymous with chilly nights and cosy flames, so for a gentle burn, choose Hervana blusher by Benefit, £23.50. The product, whose palette resembles a swirling Catherine Wheel, is a top-seller and comes in a charming blend of four different colours. As the blusher’s tagline goes, ‘What comes around goes around!’

Fireworks aren’t the only things that need light up the sky this evening. Set your eyes ablaze with Estee Lauder’s Pure Colour Eyeshadow in Sizzling Copper Metallic, £16.50. Alternatively, make your eyes smoulder with a coal-like eyeshadow. My go-to shade for smokey eyes is Estee Lauder’s Pure Color Eyeshadow in Black Crystals Metallic, £16.50.

If you’re after a warm glow, brighten your brow bones with Benefit’s Sun Beam, a golden bronze highlighter costing £18.50. For a shimmery finish, sweep Soap and Glory’s Glow All Out Luminizing Face Powder, £11 across your cheekbones.

Glitter Nail Paint - Jewel Britannia

Jewel Britannia by Barry M (image: barrym.com)

Oh and if you’re not too keen on playing with sparklers, adorn your nails with one of Barry M’s Glitter Nail Paints. It’s a surefire way to make your hands sparkle without running the risk of burning your fingers.

My favourites are the luxurious looking Gold Glitter, the ultra-shimmery Hologram Hexograms, and the iridescent Jewel Britannia – all a mere £2.99 each!

Happy Bonfire Night everyone, and remember – don’t step too close to the flames. You wouldn’t want your make up to melt now, would you?!

Fabulous Pharaos: Gisele Bündchen & Heidi Klum steal Cleopatra’s style!

It’s been two thousand years since her existence yet Cleopatra is still in vogue, as proven by the fact that both Heidi Klum and Gisele Bündchen stole her style this Halloween!

Heidi recently posted a sneak preview of her glamorous Cleopatra costume on her website but is yet to showcase the outfit properly. Due to Hurricane Sandy, the former Victoria’s Secret model has postponed her 13th annual Halloween bash until nearer Christmas so unfortunately we won’t be seeing her in costume until then.

I know, I know – hardly the most tragic outcome of Frankenstorm. But still, in the absence of Heidi’s Egyptian getup, I was glad to see Gisele unveil her own Cleopatra-inspired makeover! Gisele, who is also a former Victoria’s Secret model, posted a picture on her official Facebook fanpage on Hallow’s eve. Have a look:

Gisele Bündchen dresses up as Cleopatra for Halloween 2012 (image: facebook.com)

Gisele Bündchen dresses up as Cleopatra for Halloween 2012 (image: facebook.com)

With aqua blue eyeshadow, thick eyeliner and beaded braids, I think Gisele looked every inch the beautiful pharaoh. Needless to say her vibrant makeup was also informed by Elizabeth Taylor’s look in the 1963 film Cleopatra.

Speaking of Cleopatra’s surviving style, I’m fascinated by the way Egyptian makeup has evolved over the centuries yet retained its original character.

It’s a testament to the Egyptians’ fashion sense that their ancient style has withstood the test of time; you still see it everywhere, permeating society in the subtle shape of winged eyeliner, thick eyebrows, lustrous highlighters and luxurious eyeshadows.

And at Halloween, it comes back to haunt us in its full, dramatic form, with ladies all over the world (Victoria’s Secret models included) donning gorgeous Cleopatra costumes!

Yesterface fact: Kohl was used to protect the Egyptians’ eyes from infection, deter flies and deflect the sun’s glare!

Halloween Make-Up (it’s eek-chic!)

Halloween is upon us pumpkins, meaning it’s time to treat yourself to a bewitching makeover with some key make-up!

Choosing a Halloween costume is no easy task, which is why, when trying to decide on an outfit, I often turn to film stars for inspiration.

Over the years a huge variety of hauntingly beautiful characters have graced our cinema screens; from Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra to Christina Ricci’s Wednesday Addams, Natalie Portman’s Black Swan to Rooney Mara’s Lisbeth Salander.

And speaking of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, it’s worth pointing out that gothic glam is all the rage right now. In case you hadn’t noticed, netted skirts, studded leather jackets and spiky jewellery are infiltrating the high street.

Witching Hour by Topshop (image: topshop.com)

Witching Hour by Topshop (image: topshop.com)

Topshop, for example, has just released its new, gothic-inspired A/W collection, Witching Hour, in addition to its equally vampy make-up range, Dark Side of Nude

In fact, many beauty brands seem to have taken an eerie turn of late. There are myriad cosmetic treats on the market at the moment, many of which would make stylish additions to any chic halloween outfit…

If you’re looking to create a vampish, blood-stained pout, opt for Tom Ford’s Black Orchid Lipstick along with a touch of Dolce & Gabanna Ultra Shine Lip Gloss for a lustrous glaze.

Black Orchid lipstick by Tom Ford (image: style.com)

For smokey, feline eyes, try Carine Roitfeld jungle camouflage palette by MAC, £37 (available at Selfridges).

Define the cat-like look with Rimmel’s Exaggerate liquid eye liner and Rimmel’s extreme black volume mascara flash – the latter is brilliant at elongating lashes (somebody once asked me if I was wearing falsies!)

(image: selfridges.com)

Another product to get your claws into this Autumn is Nails in Panther by Topshop. Part of the new beauty range, Dark Side of Nude, the jet black nail varnish has a gorgeous, glittery finish that’ll make your nails sparkle!

Nails in Panther by Topshop (image: topshop.com)

And finally, though not strictly makeup, a beauty product that’s also caught my eye this halloween is The Enchanter.

Made by LUSH, the citrusy bath bomb costs £3.20, includes ‘Frankincense’ (and no, that’s not just a halloween pun, it’s an aromatic resin), and looks like a lovely way to turn your bath into a fizzing cauldron!

If you’d like some makeover ideas and product recommendations, check out Yesterface’s Cleopatra and Black Swan makeup tutorials.

Other than that, I hope you all have a very ghoulish (and very glamorous) halloween!
