Top Hair Removal Products 2013 (razors, epilators and waxing kits)

We humans have been concerned with hair-removal for thousands of years. The Ancient Egyptians, for example, used razors made of flint and bronze, and a method of depilatory called sugaring which is similar to modern-day waxing.

Thankfully hair-removal tools have developed a fair bit since then, but given the amount of choice there is on the market it can sometimes be difficult to know which products to choose. Which is why I’ve put together a list of five great hair-removal tools!

All of the following have been tried and tested by yours truly (yes, even the painful ones) so you’ll only be getting my honest opinion…

1. Venus ProSkin Sensitive

As someone with very sensitive skin, I know how much of a nightmare shaving can be. De-fuzzing is a pain at the best of times, but when it’s followed by days of painful skin irritations which leave you slapping on sudocrem and talcum powder a la Ross and the leather pants scenario in Friends, that’s when shaving becomes particularly annoying.

Which is why I was pleasantly surprised and genuinely impressed when I used Venus’ ProSkin Senstive razor. It caused me absolutely no irritation, even in sensitive areas such as my underarms and bikini line, and left my legs feeling super silky! The razor has five separate yet closely-positioned blades and comes with a showerpod. Available to buy from Boots for £9.99.

2. Wilkinson Sword Hydro Silk Razor

Equally good is Wilkinson Sword’s Hydro Silk Razor. After using this razor I noticed that my skin was soft and free of irritation, and remained that way for days. The razor has water-activated moisturising serum containing shea butter and marine extract and is the only razor to moisturize your skin for up to two hours after use, which probably explains the calming effect it had on my skin.

The razor has five “curve-sensing” blades which ensure a close shave, and the skin guards reduce the risk of cutting your skin. The razor usually costs £9.99, although the price has recently been slashed (no pun intended) to £4.99 at Boots. Venus’s ProSkin Sensitive Razor and Wilkinson Sword’s Hydro Silk Razor are two of the best razors I’ve ever used, and that’s no exaggeration!

3. Braun Silk Epil 7

I won’t lie to you, this epilator isn’t painless, but boy does it do the job. The epilator head contains forty tweezers and comes with a variety of different caps (I realize I’m making it sound like a torture device, but read on). The caps are suitable for different bodyparts including your bikini line, underarms, face and legs. The product also comes with a shaver head so you can use it as a fully-fledged dry shaver!

Braun Silk Epil 7

The epilator is brilliant at removing the absolute shortest of hairs (as little as 0.5mm) and can be used both in dry and wet conditions. You can even use it under running water! It has a high-frequency massage system, a smartlight to illuminate the finest of hairs, and a pivoting feature which adapts to your body contours. Using the epilator is a bit painful at first as your skin is particularly sensitive, but the more you use it the less it hurts. Available from Boots for £129.99.

4. JML Beauty Wand

Small, compact and effective, the JML Beauty Wand will make a handy little addition to your handbag for any on-the-go hair emergencies. The JML Beauty Wand does a great job of trimming straggly brows, furry fingers, hobbit toes or an untamed tash! It has a built-in LED light, an angled head and comes in a soft black pouch. Available to buy from jmldirect.com for £9.99.

5. Veet EasyWax Electrical Roll On

Home-waxing kits are messy and often ineffective, however Veet’s electrical Roll On is tidier than your average kit and actually mimics salon results! The kit includes one roll on applicator, waxing strips, wipes, one charger, one dock and a refillable cartridge of wax which is suitable for sensitive skin as it’s formulated with beeswax. As mentioned previously, my skin is sensitive, but I experienced no irritation after using the roll on.

Veet EasyWax Electrical Roll On

Veet EasyWax Electrical Roll On

The instruction leaflet recommends you heat the cartridge for 20 minutes before use, but I found it took closer to 45 minutes. However, after the wax heated up, the applicator was easy to use. The wax itself was far less sticky than I expected, and ripping the strips off wasn’t half as painful as I’d imagined! In fact, the actual waxing process was relatively pain-free, and unlike cold waxing kits (which often leave residue behind) all of the Veet wax came off – and took my leg hair with it! This is the best home-waxing kit I’ve tried to date, which is why I’d say it’s worth its £29.99 price tag.

January’s cold temperatures and biting winds can be unkind to your skin, which is why it’s important you take extra measures to look after your complexion at this time of year. After all, your skin is your biggest organ, so it makes sense to take care of it!

If, like me, you already have a dry and sensitive complexion, then I suggest you fend off the winter weather with a few of the products below - they’ll do a great job of protecting, soothing and nourishing your skin during the winter months.

Limited Edition Pink Glitter Nails by Elegant Touch (Review)

If you want a quick and easy way to make your hands look party-perfect, then I suggest you purchase some false nails by Elegant Touch, in particular their Limited Edition Pink Glitter Nails.

Glittery pink nails may sound horrendous on paper, but while this design is “girly” it somehow isn’t garish. The pink hue is pretty and the glittery effect adds a subtle sparkle to your fingertips.

It’s true that fake nails can often resemble talons, however these nails are short in length and have a nice shape, meaning they look both realistic and sophisticated. And, rather than glue, the set comes with super adhesive tabs which keep the nails firmly in place.

My advice? Get your claws into this Limited Edition set while you can! Available to buy from Boots for £7.10.

Razzle Dazzle ‘em with the Sparkler set by Frontcover Cosmetics

If you thought glitter was the domain of five year old girls or adults with a fetish for fairy dust, then think again. Sparkly stuff has become de rigieur of late, and if applied correctly, glittery makeup can transform your look from dull to dazzling in no time.

After all, when it comes to a snazzy party, a retro disco or a big night out, average-looking makeup just doesn’t cut it anymore. So, if you have a glitzy event to attend, I suggest you try out Sparkler by Frontcover Cosmetics.

Sparkler Set by Frontcover Cosmetics

Sparkler Set by Frontcover Cosmetics

The set includes a tube of iridescent glitter gel, a double ended brush and three small pots containing black glitter, gold glitter and gold sequins. The materials are easy to apply and the lilac-hued gel has a nice consistency; not too sticky, but it holds the materials firmly in place.

Frontcover Glitter and Sequins

Frontcover Glitter and Sequins

As is the case with all Frontcover sets, the Sparkler kit is inspired by recent catwalk trends and includes instructions on how to use the products in order to create certain looks. There are three ‘looks’ in total; Mirror Ball, Black Wing and Twinkling Eyes & Nails, but you can experiment to your heart’s content. I certainly did!

The set also includes three shimmery, long-lasting nail varnishes; I like to apply Galaxy Bound to my fingernails followed by a strip of Vinaceous down the centre of each nail for an edgy finish. The Sparkler set is currently reduced from £16 to £11.20 at frontcovercosmetics.com.

Myleene Klass Nails: That’s a Wrap!

I’m always dubious when it comes to celebrity-endorsed products because I’m doubtful as to how much actual creative input the celebrity has, but when I was recently sent a set of Myleene Klass Nail Stickers I chose not to regard it with my usual cynicism.

Why? Because I once met Myleene Klass on a photoshoot while I was working as a lowly intern for a big women’s magazine and, erm, she complimented me on my hair. Yes, I really am that shallow. And yes, any excuse to shoehorn that experience into an article.

Anyway, being the sucker for compliments enthusiastic beauty writer that I am, once I received the Myleene Klass Nail Stickers I vowed I’d try them out. And, as can be seen below, that’s exactly what I’ve just done.

Myleene Klass Nail Stickers

Myleene Klass Nail Stickers

Sycophantic silliness aside, I always give my honest opinon on products here at Yesterface, and I can genuinely say that I’m impressed with this set. Despite the fact that nail stickers have recently become de rigeur, especially among celebrities like Rihanna, I’ve never tried them before; and although this was my first go, I found them extremely easy to use!

Applying the nail stickers took almost no time at all. Unlike nail varnish they don’t smudge or create any mess, and their detailed prints create an intricate and elegant finish that you simply can’t achieve by just using nail polish. I love this particular pattern, too. Very Klassy (geddit?).

The set includes 24 nail stickers, all of which come in different shapes and sizes, and a nail file which you can use to trim and perfect the stickers in order to suit the shape of your nails. In short, a fab product which would make a great gift, personal treat or stocking filler this Christmas. If I ever meet Myleene  Klass again I’ll be sure to compliment her on her nails…

Myleene Klass Nail Stickers are available to buy from JMLdirect.com and Debenhams for £5.99

Voluminous Hair! (T.H.X. Pump Up the Volume Diffuser Dryer Review)

Over the past few decades a range of female icons have sported big bouffants, and some of those huge hairstyles have become as famous as the heads upon which they grew; Brigitte Bardot‘s beehive and Farah Fawcett‘s windswept mane both being prime examples.

At times, certain starlets have become overshadowed by their massive locks, both literally and figuratively speaking. Who could forget Jennifer Aniston’s ’90s ‘do in the smash-hit comedy Friends? Such was the popularity of Jen An’s old hairstyle that women everywhere were going into salons and asking for “The Rachel”.

Years after the show came to an end, Jennifer Aniston revealed how she thought it was “the ugliest haircut” she’d ever seen. Speaking of her longtime hairstylist Chris McMillan, who invented the cut, Jennifer said: “I love Chris but he’s the bane of my existence because he started that damn ‘Rachel’, which was not my best look.”  Well, whether she likes it or not, Jennifer Aniston will forever be associated with that hairstyle.

At the risk of furthering Jen An’s dismay, it would appear that blowdrys are still de rigueur, as proven by Cheryl Cole‘s L’Oreal ads and Miranda Kerr‘s recent 80s power blowout. Big hair, it seems, will always be in vogue. So what better time to channel this eternally fashionable trend than during the festive period? The biggest and most glamorous parties tend to take place around Christmas and NYE, so it’s only fitting that you have big, glam hair to match.

Enter Pump Up the Volume Diffuser Dryer by T.H.X, which promises “statement curls that hold their shape without a hint of frizz”. Now, I think I’m fairly well placed to judge on this matter given that my hair is thick, wavy (bordering on curly) and at times downright unruly. From personal experience, I know that big hair can be hard to handle, and so as is custom here at Yesterface, I’ll only give my honest opinion on this product.

When I first saw the Diffuser Dryer I was surprised at its sheer size in comparison to my little old dryer. The hairdryer is quite large, meaning it’s not travel-friendly, and it can get a bit tiring to hold when the diffuser nozzle is attached. This is especially true if you’re drying your hair upside down while using a low setting! First world problems, eh? Having said that, the hairdryer is able to emit a 2000w blast, meaning you can dry your hair really quickly if you use the concentrator nozzle and put the heat setting on full.

THXPump up the Volume Diffuser Dryer

Pump up the Volume Diffuser Dryer by T.H.X.

Speaking of settings, in addition to a bright fuschia ‘cool shot’ button, there are two curved switches built into the handle; one switch controls the heat, and the other switch controls the fan speed. Both switches have cute purple detailing and are designed in such a way that your fingers easily grip around them. The handle also boasts soft, rubbery and sleek materials which feel luxurious to hold.

The diffuser nozzle is a bit of a beast, but in a good way; when paired together, both the dryer and diffuser are able to tackle large amounts of hair in one go. After using the Diffuser Dryer, I found that my hair felt softer and less frizzy than it usually does after blowdrying. I also felt as if my roots had been given a slight lift and that my hair had extra bounce.

Total Hair Experts Pump Up the Volume Diffuser Dryer

Total Hair Experts Pump Up the Volume Diffuser Dryer

I like using the concentrator nozzle too as it’s a fast, effective tool for creating straight yet voluminous hair.  I’m due for a trim at the moment, but even so, when I blow-dryed my hair using the concentrator nozzle, a big round brush and Guard heat-protection spray by Neal & Wolf, I was able to achieve a really great shape.

Overall, I think the Diffuser Dryer is a great, stylish product that’s definitely worth its (very reasonable) £34.94 price tag. If you fancy getting your hands on one, the THX range is currently available exclusively at Tescos.

Just remember, when using the hairdryer, if you want ’80s volume but none of that ’80s frizz, make sure you use a good heat-protection spray, otherwise you may end up looking like this…

horrendous 80s hair

Honey, I’m home.

Stylfile Toenail Clippers

Remember Tom Pellereau? Aka. the adorable genius who won the Apprentice last year? Aka. the one who looked like he could have been Professor Weetos’ son? Know who I mean? Good, because said genius has just added a new product to his Stylfile range called the S-Clipper, and I for one am genuinely impressed!

Unlike regular clippers, the S-Clipper has “curved, scissor-like” blades which splice through stubborn toenails. It’s larger than your average clipper, but it’s easy to use and very effective. Male Grooming Products for your Brother (Christmas 2012 Gift Guide)

December 25th is fast approaching, so here are some last-minute ideas on which male grooming products to buy for your brother this Christmas - whatever his age may be!

For more suggestions on which cosmetics to buy for your dad, boyfriend, granddad or guy mates, check out the rest of Yesterface’s Male Grooming Gift Guide.

What to buy for…

Your little brother

Pacman Washbag

Chances are your tween brother’s social diary is currently filled with sleepovers and schooltrips, in which case I think the Pacman Washbag would make an amazing gift. The washbag boasts a cute retro design and a fun ‘soap on a rope’ accessory. Available at Sainsburys for £12.

Your teenage brother

Nicky Clarke Hair Clay

If your brother is a hormone-riddled, image-conscious teenage boy, then he might like some “grown-up” hair products to experiment with this Christmas. If so, I recommend getting him Nicky Clarke’s Runway Hold Matte Texturizing Clay.

Nicky Clarke hair wax

Nicky Clarke hair wax

The clay, which costs £14, has a neutral smell and is easy to apply. It also has a thick, sticky texture which lasts ages, meaning your brother can experiment to his heart’s content! Just remind him to use sparingly, otherwise he’ll end up looking like Ross Geller from Friends during his wet-head phase.

Superdry Cologne

Another thing which teenage boys are (sometimes overly) concerned with is the way they smell. I vividly recall the days where I’d walk into the 6th form common room and feel as if my nostrils were under attack.

If your little brother is starting to smell like a tub of cheap aftershave, steer him in the right direction this Christmas with more refined scents such as Superdry’s new range of stylish colognes. There are four in total, read on to find out what they are…

Superdry Cologne

Superdry Cologne

1. Superdry Black, a rich mixture of ingredients such as coriander, incense and leather.

2. Superdry Steel, a refreshing fragrance with notes of lime and bergamot.

3. Superdry Blue, a cool mixture of ingredients including pear and moss.

4. Superdry Orange, a spicy scent containing black pepper and frankincense.

Each cologne costs £29.50 per 40ml and £39 per 75ml, and can be bought from a variety of major retailers including House of Fraser, Debenhams, Boots, Superdry and superdry.com.

Topman Washbag

This grey, medium-sized Topman washbag contains two products: a refreshing Bodyspray containing seaweed extract, and a Hair and Body Wash containing angelica root extract. Available at Boots for £15. Perfect for your style-conscious teen brother.

Fat Face Washbag Gift Set

If so, what better present to get him than the Fat Face Washbag Gift Set! The set contains Body Spray, Hair and Body Wash, and a soap on a rope. A lovely gift to buy your brother, even if your nickname for him wasn’t that cruel (or, indeed, that kind). Available to buy at Boots for only £10.
