Valentine’s Day Beauty Guide: as inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins

Whether you consider Valentine’s Day to be a romantic occasion or just another commercial calendar date, chances are you’ll be celebrating it somehow anyway; either with your lover, your friends or yourself! After all, it’s a great excuse to treat yourself to some TLC.

Love is blind

However you decide to spend Valentine’s Day this year, there’s no doubt that beauty products will be involved. Enter Yesterface’s Valentine’s Day Beauty Guide; here you’ll find a variety of products, all of which are designed to make you look and feel good this Valentine’s Day.

Each item has been handpicked and tested by yours truly, and each correlates with one of the Seven Deadly Sins. After all, love is a complex emotion which has the ability to evoke darker feelings such as lust and envy. So, read on and find out which products suit which sin…

Valentine’s Day Beauty Guide; relaxing products inspired by Sloth

If you’re too lazy to do anything big this Valentine’s Day, one simple solution is to run a bath for you and your partner - or just for yourself!

Cleopatra was a big fan of the rose, and ensured her banqueting hall was filled with two feet of fragrant roses for Mark Anthony’s first visit from Rome. If you fancy following in the Pharaoh’s footsteps, then I recommend using Ancienne Ambience’s beautifully scented Mini Rosa Bath Salts, £4 from ancienneambiance.com.

Before bathing, set the mood with the huge Red Heart Rose Candle pictured below, £32, also by Ancienne Ambience. The candle is created with the softest rose fragrance, which is reminiscent of roses from ancient Damascus where for centuries the Damask Rose was a symbol of beauty and love. Can’t get much more romantic than that.

Once you’re out of the bath, lather yourself with Arbonne’s luxurious Aromassentials Unwind Massage Oil. I absolutely love this product as it boasts a calming yet refreshing scent thanks to its camomile and ylang ylang ingredients. Its silky texture feels lovely when massaged into your skin, too. I suffer from psoriasis and find this oil particularly soothing for affected areas. Available for £29 from arbonneinternational.co.uk.

Another nice, relaxing product is Petits JouJoux’s aramomatherapy candle which doubles up as massage oil.  The candle, which has a lovely scent, comes in a pretty white ceramic container with a discreet spout. The wax melts into a warm massage oil ready to use on either your own skin or your partner’s – or both!

I was surprised the first time I used this product as I was expecting the oil to be piping hot, but once you extinguish the flame you can pour the warm oil straight onto skin. The oil contains nourishing ingredients such as jojoba oil and shea butter which leave your skin feeling soft and moisturised. Prices start at £14.99 and there are six scents to choose from in total. Available to buy from Nice’n’Naughty and La Coquette.

Valentine’s Day Beauty Guide; green cosmetics inspired by Envy

We’ve all experienced irrational pangs of envy and, as the saying goes, jealousy is an ugly trait. Turn your green-eyed monster into emerald-eyed beauty this Valentine’s Day with Artdeco’s Soft Kajal Liner in Fir Tree, £7.25 from JCmakeup.com.

It looks great when applied along your lower eyeline and the shade is bang on trend; you need only take a look at the dresses which appeared on the Grammy Awards Red Carpet this year to know that the colour green is de rigueur at the moment.

Valentine’s Day Beauty Guide; products inspired by Wrath

Ever since Fifty Shades of Grey seemingly became every woman on the planet’s favourite book, adult toy sales have sky-rocketed. If you’d like to unleash your wrath this Valentine’s Day with some dom/sub roleplay à la Anastasia Steele, then get your hands on Lelo’s Adore Me Pleasure Set. I’d avoid calling your boyfriend ‘Mr Grey’ during your evening together though as it’ll probably turn him off / make him retch.

The set includes a silk blindfold, silk and suede chainlink handcuffs and Lelo’s iconic Mia 2 self-massager. The stylish lipstick-shaped vibe has a built-in USB port for charging (very clever) and boasts six settings, making it far better than your average battery-operated vibrator.

The kit is available to buy from lelo.com for £89 (reduced from £109) and is very likely to give you and your partner a good night. Alternatively, you can always use the kit solo; the blindfold would make a comfortable sleeping mask at the end of a relaxing night!

If, however, your wrath is directed at a douchebag ex or love itself this Valentine’s Day, then I suggest you blow off some steam in the tub with a Tisty Tosty Bath Ballistic, available to buy from LUSH for £3.20.

Described by LUSH as ‘a love spell’, the pretty heart-shaped bath bomb includes geranium, jasmine, lemon oil and seven rosebuds with which you can ‘count your way to a budding romance’. Failing all that, why not go out and paint the town red with a few rouge cosmetics from the “Lust” section of Yesterface’s Valentine’s Day Beauty Guide?

Bath Products for a Relaxing Night In

In the folklore of India and the Orient, the scented bath has been used to attract good spirits, new lovers and to obtain and preserve happiness. Whether you believe in that or not, there’s no denying that a nice bath can lift your spirits, be a great way to relax with your lover, and has the ability to make you feel calm and happy.

The joy of soaking in a hot tub is further heightened when bath salts are thrown into the mix. My favourite kind at the moment are the Dead Sea Aromatherapy Bath Salts, which include frankincense and rose petals. These bath salts have a delicious aroma and make for a truly invigorating bathing experience. I used the salts while I had the flu and felt my chest felt much clearer afterwards! Available for £6.59 from Boots.

During Tudor Times, Mary Queen of Scots bathed in wine, and while it’s probably not advisable to bathe in a tub of merlot these days, you can still emulate old Mary by adding a cup of cider or wine vinegar to your bath as it helps soothe dry skin. Just avoid adding any other spirits, otherwise you’ll bring a whole new meaning to the term gin-soaked.

Speaking of boozy bathing, in 2012 The Cadogan Hotel in London launched its Champagne Bath Menu which invites uber-rich guests to submerge themselves in 84 litres of champagne. Yummy! Forget bubble baths, a bath of bubbly sounds far more luxurious.

Having said that, the price ranges from £4,000 to £25,000 per bath depending on the amount and brand of champagne used. So, unless you have wads of money to burn, a champagne bath is probably off the menu.

In which case I recommend replacing Dom Pérignon Vintage with Forever’s Relaxation Bath Salts which include Lavender, Dead Sea Salt and other essential oils to soften your skin. Follow up with Forever’s Relaxation Massage Lotion to complete your relaxing bathing experience. Both products can be bought separately or as part of Forever’s Aroma Spa Collection from foreverliving.com.

Another nice bath product is Rejuvenate Bath Oil by BFAromatherapy. Part of the SplashTherapy range, the product contains Sweet Almond Oil and pure essential oils of Geranium, Juniperberry, Lime, Rosemary and Peppermint. Available from bfaromatherapy.com for £15.00. And while you’re zenning out in the tub, why not apply a face mask? Cosmecology Paris’ Mask Hydra contains sweet-smelling raspberry extract and, after leaving on for ten minutes, makes your skin look radiant and luminous.

You can also make your own scented bath using home ingredients; just add a few drops of perfume and unfragranced baby oil, or alternatively you can add a cup of powdered skimmed milk to your bath. It’s said that Cleopatra enjoyed the softening and whitening properties of milk. Well, if it’s good enough for a pharaoh…

However you decide to bathe, try and take some time out to relax in the tub this month. Lock the bathroom door, grab a good book, light a scented candle, and let your anxieties melt away. Sure, you’ll be a bathing cliché, but you’ll look and feel so much better for it!
