A Tribe Called Red Meet Black Bear
I talk about the time I spent up in Manawan a lot, and I think about the people that I met there and the warm hospitality that they showed me even more. Of all of the experiences I’ve been fortunate enough to have in Canada, spending time with the Atikamekw nation and camping in the frozen heart of winter, learning a little about their way of life, stands out as the one I feel most privileged to have experienced.
So I was hugely excited to see this short documentary from one of my favourite Canadian bands, A Tribe Called Red, called The Manawan Session, which shows so many of the people that I met up on the reserve and takes a behind-the-scenes look at the musical collaboration that they’ve done with Black Bear Singers including Daveen and his father Gilles who I stayed with!
I’m thrilled to see Black Bear get wider publicity for their amazing work, and can’t wait to see Tribe Called Red play at one of Vancouver’s most unmissable summer events, the Fair at the PNE on Wednesday 31st August.
Oh, and if A Tribe Called Red’s passionate electro-pow wow style sounds familiar, you may have heard one of their songs used in a groundbreaking ad recently by Bodyform, ‘No Blood Should Hold Us back’.
So, watch the documentary to see a little of the reserve and hear some of the amazing music that the two groups collaborated on. My only wish is that I could have seen Gilles dance when I was up there!
