How to choose your wedding cake

After choosing a dress, the perfect wedding cake is the next most important purchase for a girls’ big day. With all eyes on the bride, the cake should be the only thing capable of stealing the limelight. So why not make it a show stopper for all the right reasons with a little help from The Cake Artist.

Its-all-about-the-honeymoon

Sugar craft wizard and baker extraordinaire, Melanie Marley, MD of the Cake Artist, has been waving her magic wand, making couples’ dreams come true for over 20 years. Designs range from the traditional, to more boutique creations dripping in semi-precious stones, and cakes used as a centre piece to set off the most elaborate of themed weddings.

The Cake Artist also make delicious biscuits

Everything is hand made to bespoke order and no two cakes are ever the same. Melanie works closely with couples from enquiry to delivery, to make their hopes and visions a sugar craft reality to be admired by all.

“Some couples have a clear idea of exactly what they want but with others, it’s a case of working from a blank canvas. Every wedding cake is a collaboration of ideas that go to create a dream that is unique to the couple,” said Melanie.

But where do you begin in choosing a cake? Here are some tips to consider from The Cake Artist:

  • How many guests does the cake need to serve? Special dietary requirements?
  • Do you want to preserve your top tier for a future celebration? (ie) christening.
  • Do you want the cake served as dessert?
  • Which flavours are your favourite – for cake and filling?
  • What is your colour theme, including flowers?
  • Is there an overall theme that can be reflected in the cake?
  • Which season is the wedding? Date of celebration?
  • Type of venue and location?
  • Budget?

Was it hard to choose your wedding cake? What design did you go for?

Celebrity inspired wedding guest: Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton is the ultimate style Queen. She makes it into all the best dressed lists and every piece of clothing or jewellery she wears quickly sells out in less than 24 hours.

Her looks are always impeccable and perfect for any occasion and that is why I have chosen to highlight some of her outfits, as they will help inspire you for any upcoming wedding you may be attending.

180418387

Long dresses

Kate saves long dresses for very special occasions and they are always absolutely stunning. She usually goes for dresses that highlight her tiny waist, have a flowy skirt and short sleeves.

She completes her look with a matching clutch, sky-high heels and her famous glossy hair.

Remember, long dresses are PERFECT for evening weddings.

kate-long

Short dresses

Knee-length dresses are definitely Kate’s favourite. She wears them on most outings, public and private. Since her wedding to William in 2011 we have seen her in hundreds of them.

Although she usually favours dark colours, she sometimes surprises with bright and bold choices.

The three looks shown here are just some of my favourite and are appropriate for any type of wedding, especially a morning one.

Which one of the three is your favourite: the purple Issa dress, the Jenny Packham dress with flower detailing in the front or the stunning red Alexander McQueen creation she wore for the Diamond Jubilee River Pageant?

kate-short

Winter looks

We are lucky that Kate has engagements all year round as we get to see how she embraces all the seasons. Here are three outfits that could work for a winter wedding, which requires more covering up!

kate-winter

If you are pregnant…

Being pregnant does not mean you have to wear shapeless and boring clothes and the Duchess of Cambridge is the perfect example as to how to embrace maternity style with the ease and grace of a queen. Here are just three of the outfits she wore during her pregnancy.

They are stunning and so elegant.

kate-pregnant

Wedding dress inspiration

Very rarely, Kate goes out in white outfits, and although they are not suitable for a more traditional and religious wedding, some brides who are thinking of having a more relaxed and low-key wedding might find some inspiration in these three choices:

Do you think Kate is the ultimate style queen? Which of the outfits above is your favourite? Would you add any other to the list?

Luxury wedding cakes from Langs of London

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Charlotte Green, an incredible cake maker based in London. Charlotte is the owner of Langs of London, a luxury cake maker specialising in fine filigree icing and realistic sugar flowers that produce truly breathtaking bespoke creations for weddings and celebrations.

DSC_5261

For the glittering press event, which took place at The Bloomsbury Hotel, Charlotte created an amazing ten tier cake (see above).

The cake was decorated with more than five hundred individually handcrafted sugar roses and flowers.

The cake was designed and made in Charlotte’s studio, in Earlsfield, and transported to the venue in twelve separate boxes. The sugarpastes used in its creation weighed over twenty kilograms, and once in place on its table and stand, the luxurious creation stood at over seven feet tall! Don’t you think it’s amazing?

DSC_5199

The other guests and I were treated to a selection of DELICIOUS cakes in unique flavours: Lavender, Chocolate with Chocolate Rum Buttercream, Vanilla Rose, Sicilian Lemon, and Raspberry & White Chocolate, all washed down with a refreshing glass of champagne.

The Lavender proved to be a hit amongst the guests, but my favourite was the Sicilian Lemon, just thinking about it now makes my mouth water!

Prince Felix and Princess Claire of Luxembourg finally tied the knot in France on Saturday. The couple married in a beautiful religious ceremony in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume’s magnificent 13th century Sainte Marie-Madeleine basilica.

Princess Claire did not dissapoint and looked stunning an Elie Saab wedding dress, the family’s favourite designer.

Here we take a close look at her bridal look. Let me know what you think!

Elie Saab created Claire’s stunning  long-sleeved wedding gown. The creme-coloured silk dress was embroidered with floral motifs made out of chantilly lace as well as silver thread. It also featured embellishments of clear crystals and sequinned pearls.

Celebrity civil weddings

Claire Lademacher is the latest royal/celebrity bride to marry in an intimate civil ceremony. The German beauty married Prince Felix of Luxembourg in her home city Frankfurt on Tuesday morning.

For the special occasion, Princess Claire chose to wear an elegant white peplum dress with cap sleeves by Dutch designer Jan Taminiau and she completed the look with stunning aquamarine earrings and a bouquet made of white Platinum Avalanche roses and hydrangea flowers.

felix

Claire follows a small number of famous brides that have opted for a civil ceremony, although most times they are also followed by a religious one. Here I take a look at some of them and the outfits they chose, to serve as inspiration to future brides!

Princess Stephanie of Luxembourg

Stephanie married Prince Guillaume in October last year. On the day of her civil ceremony, the bride looked magical in a cream Chanel, high-collared jacket and skirt. She ditched the traditional bouquet in favour of a white Chanel quilted handbag.

stephanie

Princess Charlene of Monaco

A year earlier, it was the turn of Princess Charlene. The South African bride looked nothing short of princess-perfect in a beautiful Chanel sky-blue suit.

The sharp, clean fit of the blazer gave a nod to her androgynous sartorial preferences, whilst the floaty chiffon palazzo trousers added the perfect amount of gentle femininity.

charlene

The Duchess of Cornwall

Camilla chose two different outfits when she married Prince Charles in 2005. One for the actual ceremony, and the other for the blessing at St George’s Chapel.

Her first choice was an oyster silk basket-weave coat with herringbone stitch embroidery and a chiffon dress with appliqué detail, designed by Robinson Valentine. Philip Treacy designed her hat, which was natural straw overlaid with ivory French lace and trimmed with feathers.

new-wed

He also designed her headdress for the blessing at St George’s Chapel, which consisted of gold leaf feathers tipped with Swarovski Diamonds.

The Duchess’s second choice was a full length porcelain blue silk dress with a hand painted ikat design, hand-embroidered with gold thread work.

Nancy Shevell and Luisana Lopilato

It’s not only royal brides who opt for civil ceremonies but also celebrities, such as Nancy Shevell and Luisana Lopilato.

In 2011, Nancy and Paul McCartney married in the Marylebone Registry Office. Luckily, Nancy Shevell had a little help from her new stepdaughter, Sir Paul’s designer daughter Stella.

Her dress was a beautiful ivory colour, with a fitted body, long sleeves puffed at the wrist and cut at the knee. The simple look was perfect for the bride, maintaining a romantic yet formal aspect for their quiet civil ceremony.

Adding to the air of sophistication the dress was inspired by Wallis Simpson’s outfit when she married the Duke of Windsor in 1937.

split

In April that same year, Luisana Lopilato and Michael Buble made their union official in Argentina. Michael’s beautiful bride wore a pleated violet mini dress with tulle trim for her nuptials.

Her only accessory was her bridal bouquet, made up of purple orchids.

Eva Longoria

For her civil wedding to Tony Parker in 2007, Eva chose pink Empire-waist mini dress by Chanel. She completed her look with sky-high silver shoes and a pink clutch.

eva-longoria

So which bride is your favourite? And if you’re heading for a civil ceremony, what dress would you wear?

Royal weddings: Tatiana Santo Domingo and Andrea Casiraghi

After an eight-month engagement and a child together, Princess Caroline‘s son Andrea Casiraghi and Tatiana Santo Domingo finally tied the knot last month.

Both the ceremony and reception took place in Monaco and the young couple surrounded themselves with 350 close family and friends who flew over to the small Principality from all over the world.

Here we take a look at ALL the details: the two wedding dresses, the lunch party, the fancy dress dinner party, the stunning guests and much more!

 palace1--z

The bride

Tatiana was the ultimate boho bride on her big day. The 29-year-old stayed true to her style and opted to walk down the aisle in a V-neck Missoni dress with three-quarter-length sleeves.

The dress’s bodice was embroidered with raffia and silk thread, and the full-length circle skirt featured layers of silk organza that matched her five-month-old son Alexander’s bloomers (not pictured on the wedding day).

stairs

The bride ditched the traditional high-heeled wedding shoes for comfortable flat silver sandals.

Groom Andrea chose a dark blue suit with a spotted tie and white shirt.

The hair and make-up

Bride Tatiana topped the vintage look off with tousled tresses and a floral headpiece, similar to the she wore for her pre-wedding party.

As for her make-up, she kept her look natural, opting for a bit of blusher and lipstick.

tati

The bridesmaids

The bridesmaids weren’t given any specific dressing instructions, but almost all were in Dolce & Gabbana or Valentino.  Two of the bridesmaids wore a yellow Valentino dress which featured light pink, dark pink and yellow heavy lace at the chest with a flirty cutout, a round neckline, a high waisted and pleated A-line skirt with a scalloped hem and two more flirtatious cutouts on the back.

The other two bridesmaids were spotted in a Dolce&Gabbana bouquet flower and strawberry print dress from the FW14 pre collection.

The bride’s second wedding dress

For the couple’s wedding dinner party, the bride changed into a stunning lace Valentino dress with long sleeves, from the 2013 Resort Collection.

It seems the dress was specially made for the bride. The pattern used for the dress is only featured in the Resort collection as a jump suit and the actual design is from the Valentino Spring/Summer collection.

The wedding parties

Following the romantic ceremony, which took place inside the Palace, Andrea and Tatiana were joined by the likes of Greek shipping heiress Eugenie Niarchos and Tatiana’s influential New York-based siblings for an al fresco lunch by the Palace pool. The guests enjoyed a garden lunch with popcorn and ice-cream cart included.

new-mon-1--a

A rock-and-reggae band performed as guests lounged on casual picnic blankets set up on the hillside. Everyone drank the local electric-blue-coloured pastis and, just as the sun hit its peak in the sky, Princess Stephanie and Princess Caroline’s daughters led the charge and jumped into the pool.

Later in the day, all guests changed into the long gowns and tuxedos for an incredible party which took place at the Monte-Carlo Sporting Club.

Chrissy Teigen’s bridal look

Model Chrissy Teigen and singer John Legend finally tied the knot on Saturday in front of 125 guests, including close family and friends like Kanye West, Stevie Wonder and Brooklyn Decker, who acted as maid of honour.

The romantic wedding took place in Italy, Lake Como, and thanks to the model and Instagram, we have seen one of the three stunning Vera Wang gowns the bride wore on her big day.

chrissy

The dresses

The stunning bride chose three Vera Wang gowns for her big day. One for the ceremony, one for the reception and a last one for the after party.

The ceremony dress was a stunning ivory strapless open back, V-neck ballgown with a lifted tulle skirt and tiered flange, and hand-cut petal embroidered detail (see above). For the reception, the model chose an ivory strapless mermaid gown with a pleated bodice.

She finished off her stunning looks with a crimson strapless mermaid gown with a hand-draped bodice and inverted flange skirt with crystal embroidery for the after party.

new-vera

Hair and make-up

Mrs Legend wore her hair swept back from her face in a simple elegant chignon.

Her make-up was flawless, a natural complexion appeared to have been achieved through pared-down foundation and bronzer, while several layers of mascara and eye liner framed her eyes. For her lips, she chose a dark pink lipstick.

Jewels

Chrissy wore stunning drop down earrings and a simple and elegant bracelet.

What to you think of Chrissy’s ceremony wedding dress? Would you wear more than one dress on your wedding day?

The groom

John Legend wore a Gucci Made to Order grey notch lapel two button Signoria suit with white dress shirt, white bowtie and black leather lace-ups. John’s groomsmen wore Gucci grey notch lapel two button Signoria suits with a white dress shirt, beige satin tie and brown leather lace ups.

Inside Tatiana Santo Domingo and Andrea Casiraghi’s pre-wedding dinner

It has been two weeks since Princess Caroline’s son Andrea Casiraghi and, his then fiancée, Tatiana Santo Domingo celebrated the most stylish royal pre-wedding party of the year.

The couple, who are known for their laidback and bohemian style, ditched their long gowns, suits and tiaras to enjoy a fun and relaxing pre-wedding party aboard Princess Caroline’s yacht Pacha III.

tatiana-hendo--z

The couple gathered their nearest and dearest at the party, including fashionista Bianca Brandolini d’Adda, Eugenie Niarchos and, of course, Charlotte Casiraghi. All the ladies chose to wear white for the occasion and accessorised their summer dresses with stunning white and pink floral headpieces.

The bride stood out from the rest of the girls in a pretty red dip-dye Missoni dress, the fashion label owned by her close friend Margherita Missoni, who was unable to attend the event as she was 41 weeks pregnant with her first son.

tatiana--z

Even Tatiana and Andrea’s Boston terrier dog, named Daphne, was ‘dressed’ for the occasion as the picture below shows.

All the guest were treated to exquisite food whilst enjoying views of the Mediterranean sea. A special place on the table was saved for the couple’s stunning cake.

Millie Mackintosh’s bridal make-up

Many brides are still eager to know how Millie Mackintosh, who tied the knot last week, achieved such a flawless and polished look for her wedding day.

The Made In Chelsea star is known for having  incredible skin but she has confessed that she took extra care in the months leading up to her big day. Here we show you exactly how she achieved her gorgeous glow.

millie-dress-make

Skin preparation

Skin care expert and celebrity facialist Elizabeth Caroline was the bride’s official wedding facialist. The skin expert prepped Millie’s skin for months before the big day using a combination of her bespoke, handmade products and unique beauty treatments.

Speaking to Grazia, Elizabeth revealed that the night before the wedding, she set up Millie’s hotel room with scented candles, scattered petals and had classical music piped through the ceiling, and then treated her to an Elementals Massage and A-Lift Elementals Facial “to make sure she had a restful night and was glowing from the inside out”.

facial

The base

To achieve Millie’s natural look I recommend the new Dr. LeWinn’s Skin Perfect foundation, which creates the most gorgeous, glowing skin. Millie is a big fan of the anti-ageing foundation because it boosts radiance, deeply hydrates, smooths fine lines and leaves skin soft and velvety. It is available in six different shades and with SPF 15.

base

The eyes

Bobbi Brown’s limited edition Rich Chocolate Eye Palette, £39.50, has a beautiful array of coffee tones and is perfect to achieve the star’s earthy eye make-up. Then, add drama to the upper lash line by applying liquid eyeliner and Millie’s favourite Portobello Belgravia false lashes, £8.99.

The nails

On her wedding day, the 23-year-old chose a baby pink French manicure to complement her lace Temperley dress and pastel bouquet. Go for OPI’s ‘don’t burst my bubble’ shade, which is perfect to achieve this look!
