Super Sleek

As I’ve said before (and will again, I repeat myself a lot in life) kids today don’t know they’re born. Not only do they not have to tolerate dial up internet, let alone play Paperboy on a ZX Spectrum, even bargain make up is excellent. In my day, it was all Constance Carroll rollerball lipgloss and Collection 2000 concealer sticks. If you were very, very lucky, you might be able to get a Rimmel Black Cherries lipstick and feel quite sophisticated.

Today, it’s a different story. The shops are overflowing with great brands and they’re all pretty great. The cheaper end of the spectrum used to have incredibly limited colour choices and a few core product lines. Nowadays that is not the case, making the world of make up a much more democratic place. I, for one, think that’s a great thing.

One of my favourite bargain brands is Sleek MakeUP. Seriously, it’s becoming a bit of a problem. I picked up a couple of palettes when I was in England last November, kept one and gave one to a make-up obsessed friend in Toronto – we were both hooked. Now, every time I come home, I find myself in Superdrug, stroking the little black plastic cases and trying to remember which ones I already have. They inevitably buying a duplicate and having to give it away. Because I’m an idiot.

Happily, there are always lots of new products launching to keep me on my toes, including the rather fab new eye and cheek palettes. I have ‘Dancing Till Dusk’ which is a great collection of two existing blush shades and four eyeshadows from the iDivine Au Naturel palette. The shades in this bad boy were right up my alley – ‘Mirrored Pink’, a light pink shimmer blush, ‘Sahara’, a dark matte coral and four brown/taupe eyeshadows, two matte and two shimmer. All the powders have good pigmentation and staying power, as with any bargain brand, I would always recommend using primer to help them hold but for the money – 9.99 – it’s a total bargain. We can all just agree not to talk about the included applicators but whatever, it’s hardly a problem. If you’ve already got the Au Naturel iDivine palette, you might not want to bother with this but as someone who travels a lot, I love that Sleek have combined four of their most easy to wear shadows and two useful blushes in one palette. Thanks, you guys!

Right now, Superdrug has a three for two promotion on all cosmetics which makes treating yourself even more affordable.I’m definitely picking up more Sleek MakeUP palettes as stocking fillers for my friends this Christmas. They’re a fun way to experiment with new shades and finishes without making an extravagant financial investment plus, HURRAH, more money for Christmas parties! Cinderella, you shall go to the ball. And look shit hot while you’re at it.

*samples were provided for review, thankfully ones I didn’t already have…

  • I bought the contouring palette on Saturday and I’m so glad I did! It’s a great kit and such a good bargain. I wish they did brushes as well, I can imagine them being quite good.
