Dressing Beyoncé was incredibly exciting…
Earlier on this year I received an incredibly exciting phone call from Beyoncé’s stylist asking me if I would be interested in designing outfits for some of her most memorable appearances of 2016, including The Superbowl and her Formation Tour. There was no thought needed – I accepted immediately.
Beyoncé looked breathtaking in the custom-made pieces for her performance at the BET awards and in the opening leg of her Formation tour. I went for a powerful African theme when creating the piece for the BET awards, taking inspiration from tribal tattoos and body paint. The body was adorned with Jet Black Swarovski crystals and finished with a silk fringe, which added a signature Julien Macdonald glamorous touch.
Not long before the event we saw images of Beyoncé rehearsing in our full body suit – she looked incredible. We immediately began gathering images for social media and waited eagerly in anticipation for the first glimpse of Beyoncé on stage. She looked absolutely unbelievable and the performance was simply amazing. If you haven’t seen it, you must!
Once Beyoncé landed in London for her Formation tour the excitement started all over again as she had invited me to the opening night at Wembley. When the lights went up and I saw her in my 24 Carat gold embroidered body it took my breath away. I want to say thank you to Beyoncé and her incredible team for a night I wont forget!
To create a series of one off bespoke pieces for a global superstar such as Beyoncé is an honour and my absolute passion. The process to create the incredibly detailed, hand made, and specialised pieces took many long days and nights with my team working around a brief provided by the client. The deadline was extremely tight and there were over 100,000 Swarovski crystals to be hand stitched onto the pieces – but it was undoubtedly worth it. Beyoncé is always a dream client of mine; her brief is always to represent strong, confident, powerful and sexy women! After the show her stylist took me back stage, where I had the chance to meet Beyoncé and congratulate her on a fantastic show. Here are the original sketches of my pieces:
Another high profile client of mine was recently in London for the Glamour Awards, Kourtney Kardashian. It was great to catch-up with her and she looked simply stunning in my red embellished knit cocktail dress.
Fashion aside, I have been back to the desert. On behalf of Tough Trust – a charity close to my heart – I ran a half marathon in Kenya. It was an incredible experience but the scorching sun made it extremely tough. I was so relieved when crossing the finishing line and so proud of my achievement. After my desert walk and half marathon it’s time to rest up for a couple of weeks before the build up to London Fashion Week. I can’t believe that my show is only three weeks away!
