The La Durbin 15 Minute Tips for Yummy Mummies Everywhere!

How to be a Yummy Mummy in 15 minutes!!

Zara Philips, Kate Middleton, Kim Kardashian, Laura Hamilton are all new mums and super glamorous, but any new mum will tell you that time is a luxury and finding time for yourself is hard whether you have a new born or a toddler.  So this week in our blog, in honour of all the lovely Yummy Mummies,  we wanted to share some tips and tricks for looking gorgeous in 15 minutes… perfect if you are heading out to a romantic dinner for Valentine’s Day.

La Durb

We created two looks for Torty, both simply need hair spray a hair band and a couple of kirby grips to put in place… they also work best on hair that isn’t just washed so perfect if bath time for little ones takes over…

What you need!

What you need

Look One

To start take a small section of the hair about two inches wide at the front of the head and backcomb gently leaving the top layer smooth  – to do this all you need is a comb!

Smooth over into a quiff and hold in place with a kirby grip. Now take the rest of the hair and gently sweep to the side into a loose pony tail and again backcomb to create volume.

Next using more kirby grips, lightly pin the ends of the hair under and around the hair bobble, using north south, east and west directions to create the perfect messy bun.

Finish off with hairspray and voilà! You’re ready to go for drinks in less than 15 minutes.

Look Two

If you prefer your hair down then this is a great style for a romantic dinner for two.

Start by parting the hair on the side and backcomb the side with the most hair about two inches away from the parting to create volume and lift (a great way to hide hair that has gone a little flat). Smooth over with a soft brush.

On the other side of the hair take a section of hair from around the top of the ear and, holding the hair, low plait and pull round to follow the shape of the head. Tuck the end of the plait under hair to hide it and pin with a kirby grip to keep in place.

On the other side of the hair, use straighteners to gently wave the hair around the face to create soft movement and curl.

Curls on the side

Finish with hairspray.

This creates a simple but elegant look for the evening.

Make up – The icing on the cake!

To complete the look we used light make up all done in the 15 minute time frame with the essentials being foundation, mascara, eyeliner, a smoky eye palate and a sweep of blusher.

We hope you enjoy these quick and easy looks and that you have a romance filled Valentine’s Day!

Until next time… La Durbin xx

What to replenish in your make-up bag this January….

Kate Middleton is not only the Duchess of Cambridge but also the queen of thriftiness and well known for recycling her favourite outfits. Here at La Durbin we know that January can be a long month and after the Christmas party season your make-up and beauty bag can be running on empty, so this week we thought we would share some tips for how to look good on a budget and get that Duchess of Cambridge glow.

Homemade sugar scrubs are the perfect way to exfoliate dry rough winter skin and get rid of dull, tired skin to reveal a glow that the Duchess herself would be envious of. To make your own sugar scrub we recommend mixing a cup of brown sugar with ten drops of vanilla essential oil or essence with some warm water and rubbing into the skin weekly. Whilst you do this use your toothbrush in small circular movements to help improve chapped lips to create the perfect base for your make up.

What to replenish in your make up bag this January:

Mascara is without doubt our beauty essential in the salon and finding the mascara that works best for you ensures you’ll always have enough to spark up your eyes for maximum flutter. The secret to good mascara is definitely the wand- you don’t have to spends lots of money on a brand to create that flutter you want, find a wand you like and look for the shape amongst a range of beauty brands.

Whether it’s an essential for you or just used in emergencies, having a foundation on hand means you can ensure an even skin tone, and glowing skin at any time. BB cream is a great foundation that adds a medium coverage to the skin and gives that glow that makes Kate shine.

Bronzer is an easy way to update your daytime look for a night out, and it’s also perfect for hiding your cheeks if you start to blush! A good bronzer is all about the colour, not about the price tag. If you have a cool skin tone you want a cool brown, and if you have a warmer skin tone you want to use a warm brown. This will stop you looking orange which is never a good look amongst the pale faces in January!

Lipbalm, especially in these winter months, is essential to give you a fresher look. There is nothing worse than dry chapped lips. Tinted lipbalms also work great to add a bit of colour to your lips, such as a nude colour, or rose pink. Vaseline is a cheap and brilliant brand that offers a range of different types of colours.

January is often a time when we hide away but we hope that these simple tips to help you stay gorgeous mean that you will be enjoying a little bit of fun at thestart of the year!

Have a great week, until next time… La Durbin xx

Learn how to recreate the classic Marilyn Monroe look.

HELLO! online recently posted a poll on the world’s most iconic hairstyles, and as Marilyn Monroe topped the list, it gave us inspiration for this week’s Get the Look feature.

Lead pic

The look takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to create, including make-up and is suitable for mid-length hair; if your hair is longer you can still recreate the look by pinning the hair underneath.

 The Hair Prep

  • Start with wet hair and spray with a light heat protector. Take the hair and clip it up on your head, leaving two sections at the nape of the neck free.

Pic 1

  • Start to blow-dry the hair using a round bristle brush as you finish each section start to add the heated rollers.

  • Continue to blow dry the hair in sections, adding the rollers until your whole head is up in rollers.

  • As Marilyn had a side parting when you get to the front of the hair, position the rollers along the parting to ensure the waves set with the right curl.

Whilst you wait for your rollers to set, we recommend maybe in true Hollywood style maybe having a little glass of fizz, it is nearly Christmas after all!

It is also the perfect time to begin your make-up!

Creating the face of screen legend

  • Marylyn’s make –up is a classic vintage Hollywood look and our top tip is to keep the make up simple.

  • Use a colour wash on the eye (a colour wash is a lighter colour than the lip placed on the moveable part of they eye)

  • Then take a taupe coloured shadow and blend into the socket line and outer edge of the eye. This creates a natural look but adds emphasis to the eye and opens it up.

  • Use a kohl pencil eye liner (Bobbi Brown black coal – is always good but you can pick one up from most chemists and make-up shops ) and apply to the water line of the eye. Do this is three stages.

  • 1st stage- apply to the inner corner of the eyes water line.

  • 2nd stage- apply to the middle of the water line

  • 3rd bring the coal to the outer eye in water line.

  •  TOP TIP:- Always apply the coal liner on the top water line of the eye. This helps keep the colour, so when you blink, you blink the coal on coal, and it stops the bottom waterline running and smudging.

  • To create a full lash, you want to apply the mascara 2-3 times BUT apply directly to the roots and brush out (as if your combing your lashes) on top of the lashes, not underneath. This will prevent your mascara clogging.

  • To create a strong full red lip, always use a lip liner first to create the definition of the lips. If you have small lips, apply the liner above your lip line. And if you have larger lips, apply the liner underneath your lip line.

Pic 7Pic 9

  • Keep you blush in the same colour pallet as your lips. (If you use a warm red, use a warm blush or if you use a cool red, use a cool blush) and apply to the apples of your cheeks.

  • The ‘apples of your cheeks’ are the plumpest area on the cheek when you smile. This creates a really natural healthy look.

Once you have finished your make-up it is time to take out the curlers and finish the look.

  • Carefully take them out starting from the nape of the neck, as you take each one out, then gently backcomb the hair from the root for about two to three inches to create volume.

  • Next position the curls around your face to create your own perfect Marilyn Monroe style.

If your hair is longer then simply pin the curls using grips to create the look, allowing an extra few minutes.

We hope you love this look as much as we do. We love old school glamour and it makes for a great look this party season.

Until next week, have fun! La Durbin x

Learn how to recreate Millie Mackintosh’s red carpet look

Party season is here! At the salon we call it the glamorous season and to help everyone look party perfect this week, we teach you how to recreate the Millie Mackintosh’s red carpet look.

Millie Mac

This look takes about 45 minutes to recreate and you will need a curling tong or wand, some hair pins and a firm hold hairspray.
  • To create the perfect up do this party season it is really best to have hair that isn’t freshly washed as it will hold better.

  • Start by sectioning the hair from the nape of the neck and using a curling tong or wand start curling the hair into soft waves; to get the perfect curl wrap the hair around the tong being sure to keep the end on the wand. For the hair higher up the head only take the curl up to the middle of the hair as the top section needs to remain straight for this look. Continue until all your hair is in loose curls.

  • Once all your hair is curled, tip the head forward and brush all your hair. Next throw your hair backwards to create lots of volume!

  • Next take inch thick sections and backcomb from the root to about 2inches down starting with hairline going towards the nape of the neck this creates more volume for the up do and gives your hair more grip when you put it up

  • Pull your  hair back from the face leaving some loose strands at the front to frame the face. Start to pin the hair on the left hand side, using long grips, next pull the hair across from the right hand side and secure with a hair pin.
  • Continue to pin the hair, to create there perfect look, wrap the hair around your finger as you pin it. You can make this as neat or messy as you like, to create the Millie Mackintosh look we have kept it loose and soft around the nape of the neck.

Hair Up

  • Once you have pinned all your hair, take your curling tongs again and softly re-curl the hair that you have left out of the up-do. The hair at the front should be curled backwards away from the face to frame the face.

Front Curls

  • Once you have finished spray with hairspray to keep in place.
  • To complete the look we recommend a superstar boyfriend like Professor Green but just in case you can’t find one we also recommend smokey eyes and soft peach coloured lips!

Final Front

Enjoy your Christmas parties; until next week! La Durbin x

Vintage Makeup: recreate Rachel McAdams’s beautiful look from The Notebook

Here at La Durbin we love old style glamour, one of our favourite concepts is vintage hair and make-up. It is a great look for the party season.

This week we are showing you how to re-create the beautiful 1940’s look  as seen on Rachel McAdams in The Notebook.

Getting the perfect base

  • Start by cleaning the face thoroughly and remove the hair from the face
  • Apply light foundation and power to the face.  Don’t shy away from powder it is the best way to keep your foundation in place throughout the day.
  • Before applying the eye shadow- always make sure you have really powdered the eye- to help keep the shadow in place for longer. This helps stop the shadow from separating over the eye due to the oil

Elegant Eyes

  • With a round socket brush using a ‘top’ or ‘tea stain’ colour, apply the eye shadow in the socket line of the eye, using the natural shape of the eye to guide you. Blend in evenly.
  • editphoto-7
  • With a liquid liner get a good consistency on the brush, and apply on the base line. Always close your eye for this first step.
  • editphoto-1
  • Open the eye and bring the liquid liner into the corner of the eye, using an ultra fine line.
  • With the eye open again do the outer corner on the eye, and using the crease line of the eye bring the eye liner up to create that ‘flick’ finish at the end.
  • editphoto-9
  • Repeat on other eye. BUT REMEMBER eyes are not twins but sisters, so you will never get them identical. SO DON’T PANIC if you are not completely accurate and the eyes are not exactly the same
  • Once liner has been applied you can add a creamy colour with a ‘tope’ or ‘tea stain’ colours, ever so slightly over the eye to brighten it up ever so slightly.
  • For the final touch add your mascara to create beautiful full lashes

Lovely Lips

  • To create the true vintage look always use a red lipstick/colour to really emphasis that vintage look. Lady Danger from Mac is a brilliant red to use but there are lots of others and it is important to find one that you feel comfortable with
  • Keep your blush in the same colour of your lips and apply on the ‘apples’ of your cheeks.  A really important tip to remember is that you want to use warm reds for younger skins and cooler red for more mature skins.
  • editphoto-8
  • To complete the look we recommend a head of tumbling curls.

How to get Kate Middleton’s trademark beautiful bouncy hair

How to get Kate Middleton’s trademark beautiful bouncy hair

Kate Middleton has gorgeous hair, full of volume and movement. This party season if you want to re-create one of her classic looks here are some easy-to-follow steps on how to look like the Duchess herself!

– Heated rollers are the best way to achieve Kate’s hairstyle. Firstly, start with freshly washed hair and using a soft styling product (depending on hair type), blowdry with a large round brush for naturally frizzy hair or a paddle brush for smooth hair.

Blow dry your hair straight using a paddle brush

Blow dry your hair straight using a paddle brush

 – Next, take each section 1 inch apart. Stay consistent with the size of the heated rollers throughout the hair, starting at the top and moving away from the hair line and section down the sides. Then, section down the back of the head towards the nape of the neck.

Section the hair

Section the hair and add the rollers starting from the top

 – Leave the rollers to cool down for as long as you can to make it last – the longer you can leave the better bounce!

Keep going until you have added all the rollers

– When you remove the rollers, twist them out and let the hair fall into place. Then, when all the rollers are out, glide fingers through the hair to avoid roller marks (this is very important for perfect bounce and movement).

Run you fingers through the hair to remove roller marks

– Finally use a drop of serum on the fingertips for added smoothness and voila! The hair should be full of movement and bounce.

Beautiful Bouncy Hair

The finished look!

– Alternatively, if you do not have rollers to create Kate’s look, a large curling tong will also work. Simply section the hair after it’s been blow-dried, starting with 2inch sections going in the direction from the nape of the neck up, curl the ends of the hair throughout, starting at the back. When all the ends of the hair have been curled all over, run fingers through again to achieve Kate’s trademark look!
