Our favourite time of year came with a touch of sadness…

Christmas is always a magical time in our house – my husband starts playing carols immediately after the bonfires of Guy Fawkes night have been extinguished, and the tree is up pretty quickly after that. Both of our families come to ours – and this year they were all looking forward to there being a bump to rub and talk to all day long.

Although, sadly, our Christmas plans didn’t quite start the way we’d hoped. On Christmas Eve our much loved ginger cat Marvin passed away. It was the strangest thing ever, and if I’m honest it still doesn’t feel real. He was sat in his favourite spot in the lounge, and simply looked like he was in the middle of a peaceful sleep. Marv was very ill last year, and we almost lost him then, so we’re very grateful to have had that extra year and a half with him. There was no sign that he was poorly – he was eating, playing and giving us kisses as normal that morning. If anything he was being more affectionate than ever. Because of that, we don’t believe he was in any pain.

I know a lot of people think highly of their pets (something non-pet owners probably don’t understand) but Marv really was special – he was one of a kind with the most awesomely loving personality. We’re so saddened that our little dude is no longer with us, but are grateful that he was a part of our family.

With 12 guests to feed and a whopping big turkey in the fridge, Christmas Day still came with all its madness – a nice distraction from the previous day’s events.

This year it was Tom who took over as chef on the big day (as I’m six months pregnant I was banned from any responsibility), and my oh my he did a wonderful job! He took the task very seriously and practised his potatoes, stuffing, carrots, parsnips and Brussels beforehand. All were superb. It was a real feast and, as is tradition in our house, everyone had to roll away from the dinner table once it was all gone.

The evening was spent stuffing our faces further with chocolate (mostly me) and cheese and wine (everyone else), whilst watching Doctor Who and playing games of Pucket (the best game ever invented – my sister is the champion) and Heads Up (ridiculously funny).

Boxing day was a lot calmer, with us going for a walk to feed a donkey and horse before curling up to eat even more chocolate.

Unfortunately after that my body decided to stop fighting the cold/cough I’d been struggling to hold off– meaning we had to cancel tickets to see the wonderful Tom Hiddleston at The Donmar in Coriolanus. Gutted, but I didn’t want to be the annoying lady in the audience who coughed and spluttered throughout!

I’m still full of snot (lovely), but looking forward to welcoming 2014 – I just know it’s going to be a magical year for so many people!

Happy New Year!

Is that a duck? No, it’s a human waddling…

Hello everyone

My bump isn’t ridiculously big (I still have three months worth of human growing to go), so it came as a huge surprise to find I have started waddling. I wasn’t even aware I was doing it until a guy friend of mine pointed it out when we were taking a stroll. There was no denying that I was swaying from side to side with each step I took. He and my husband found my new style of walking very funny. I imagine it’s something that’s only going to get more pronounced the bigger my bump gets, so I’m just going to embrace it. I love walking, and it’s meant to be great for pregnant ladies… therefore I’ll be waddling along for a while yet!

Having relieved myself of book two for a week or two (it’s now in the copy-editing process), I’ve found myself able to see family and friends at last. Boy have I been cramming them all in – Christmas meals, girlie time with cake, a naughty late night pizza with my dad… It’s been fantastic.

One of my highlights of the week was getting to see my friend Savannah Stevenson on stage at the Victoria Apollo for her official first night as Glinda in Wicked (I wore a Rock-a-Bye Rosie dress from www.littleblackdress.co.uk for the occasion). Savvy was, as I knew she would be, sensational. Utterly funny, charming and magical – I’d definitely recommend going to see her in it! Following the show there was an after-party – at which we decided to get in a little group photo, but with Dougie taking over from Tom as the ‘bump holder’ – bizarre, but we found it hilarious.

Something I’ve loved about being pregnant is hearing mine and Tom’s parents talk about when they were expecting us, our sisters and my brother. This week my mum had a rummage in her loft and found the old medical records from her pregnancies and the hospital bands from all three of us. Gone are the guesses as to what times we were born, now we all know precisely. All this was kept along with an old blanket, shawl and Mario’s christening dress (yes, I know it’s a gown, but I did have a chuckle at the thought of him in a dress – so mature) in a battered old blue suitcase with rusty clasps… The suitcase my dad bought his belongings in when he moved here from Italy almost 40 years ago. I feel oddly protective of the weathered case and have now claimed it as my own – just to marvel at it, it’s totally unusable now.

With a few days left until Christmas we’re making a last-minute dash to get things ready for Santa. Ooh, and we have another scan booked in too! I’m always stunned to see how much our little Crumb has developed in the weeks between scans… I cry every time I see those tiny arms and legs kicking around. Life is incredible.

Sending huge amounts of festive cheer to you all!

Love,

Giovanna. Xx

My First Hello on my HELLO! Online Blog

Hello and welcome to my brand spanking new blog for HELLO! Online. I’m thrilled to have been asked to share my musings on here on a weekly basis. Before we all get too giddy and excited though, I feel I should warn you that I’m extremely boring. My ideal night is one spent in an animal onesie on the sofa, with a cuppa and a few biscuits (preferably chocolate hobnobs). If you were hoping for celeb gossip of great nights out then this might not be the place for you… BUT, if you love cake, cats, pajamas and happy things – WELCOME!

To kick start my weekly ramblings – here’s a list of things you should know about me…

  •  I tweet far too much – usually about my three cats (Aurora, Leia and Marvin), or detailing what cake I’ve naughtily eaten that day.
  •  I’m an actress and have a big love of the theatre, although I’ve not trod the boards for a couple of years because…
  •  I’ve somehow (after a lot of hard work) become an author (my debut novel Billy and Me is out now, and book two will be available from May 2014).
  •  I’m married to Tom from McFly/McBusted (the cute one with the glasses and dimple).
  •  I could be referred to as the bride in THAT YouTube video in THAT wedding speech… my husband is ever so romantic.
  •  I’m currently growing a human in my tummy and am about to become a mum for the first time. Yes, I’m the preggers lady in THAT baby announcement video with THOSE pumpkins. How else do people share such news?

With a little bubba due in March, I’ve no idea what the next few months will bring, but I’ll be sharing whatever does happen on this blog. No doubt there’ll be silliness with Tom, family and friends, progress reports on book two (like a title and cover) and lots and lots of bump updates – it’s all up for grabs!

This week my husband and I are in Hello! magazine. I always find it funny doing photoshoots with my husband (they aren’t something I’m used to doing), but this one was particularly relaxed. The highlight for me was being able to eat whatever I fancied at lunch and not worrying that I’d be bloated in the pictures taken that afternoon… I even had cake! So yes, grab a copy of that and have a read (think of it as homework – but more fun), and I’ll see you here next week – after I’ve overdosed on the festive chocolates. ;-)
