Our favourite time of year came with a touch of sadness…

Christmas is always a magical time in our house – my husband starts playing carols immediately after the bonfires of Guy Fawkes night have been extinguished, and the tree is up pretty quickly after that. Both of our families come to ours – and this year they were all looking forward to there being a bump to rub and talk to all day long.

Although, sadly, our Christmas plans didn’t quite start the way we’d hoped. On Christmas Eve our much loved ginger cat Marvin passed away. It was the strangest thing ever, and if I’m honest it still doesn’t feel real. He was sat in his favourite spot in the lounge, and simply looked like he was in the middle of a peaceful sleep. Marv was very ill last year, and we almost lost him then, so we’re very grateful to have had that extra year and a half with him. There was no sign that he was poorly – he was eating, playing and giving us kisses as normal that morning. If anything he was being more affectionate than ever. Because of that, we don’t believe he was in any pain.

I know a lot of people think highly of their pets (something non-pet owners probably don’t understand) but Marv really was special – he was one of a kind with the most awesomely loving personality. We’re so saddened that our little dude is no longer with us, but are grateful that he was a part of our family.

With 12 guests to feed and a whopping big turkey in the fridge, Christmas Day still came with all its madness – a nice distraction from the previous day’s events.

This year it was Tom who took over as chef on the big day (as I’m six months pregnant I was banned from any responsibility), and my oh my he did a wonderful job! He took the task very seriously and practised his potatoes, stuffing, carrots, parsnips and Brussels beforehand. All were superb. It was a real feast and, as is tradition in our house, everyone had to roll away from the dinner table once it was all gone.

The evening was spent stuffing our faces further with chocolate (mostly me) and cheese and wine (everyone else), whilst watching Doctor Who and playing games of Pucket (the best game ever invented – my sister is the champion) and Heads Up (ridiculously funny).

Boxing day was a lot calmer, with us going for a walk to feed a donkey and horse before curling up to eat even more chocolate.

Unfortunately after that my body decided to stop fighting the cold/cough I’d been struggling to hold off– meaning we had to cancel tickets to see the wonderful Tom Hiddleston at The Donmar in Coriolanus. Gutted, but I didn’t want to be the annoying lady in the audience who coughed and spluttered throughout!

I’m still full of snot (lovely), but looking forward to welcoming 2014 – I just know it’s going to be a magical year for so many people!

Happy New Year!

Love Gi. Xx

  • Hi, Giovanna! :) (I never know if I may call you just Gi or not, but anyway!)
I’m really sorry for Marvin. :( Hopefuly, he’s now resting and in peace somewhere, but I understand how hard it must have been, since I have a dog who’s quite old and, anyway, I have a pet and I imagine your pain. May the force be with you Fletchers in this difficult time.

  • Hello Gi!
I hope that you, Tom and baby have spent a beautiful and wonderful Christmas.
I was greatly saddened by the news about Marvin, I knew I was leaving my job and at the same time I started to cry. Even not having known or lived with him personally. I like a Galaxy Defender had only one contact from play him in the Super City with Tom and he was and is indeed a great mascot for us and we will never forget him.
Anyway now I want to wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR. And that in 2014 a lot of good things happen to you, especially with the arrival of Baby soon.

    Lots of Love

  • I had been pets and I lost 4 dogs and it was so hard, I miss them so much, especially in the early days. Now I have a lovely dog (6 years) and she steals my smiles.
Marvin will be with you always because you won’t forget him never and this is the important.
I hope your pregnancy goes well and born a healthy and strong baby as his parents!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Gi.
    Love, Zeni. xxx

  • Hello from Argentina lovely lady!
I love your bump! It makes me reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaally happy.
But I was pretty sad when i found out about Marvs.
If i start thinking about it, it’s like: I feel sad for the cat of someone i don’t really know. But it’s extrange because i feel like i know you. Both of you. (That’s creepy too). So, I just want to say that i send you all my love. And I want to wish you the best 2014 you can have.
    Happy new year!

  • Hello Gi!!!!!
I’m so happy you’re enjoying all this awesome moments together!
I’m sure you will be the best parents ever! no doubts.
I’m also glad Tom mentioned your blog in his Vlog today, I’ve spent the whole morning reading everything here. :)
And it was amazing to know about hypnobirthing, it was the first time I’ve heard about it.

Please take a look on this link:

Its one AWESOME list of everything you could think of your baby will need.
And as well reviews of products, safety tips, safe toys, everything!
It has links for the most products to buy online, they are from US, but you can find them here too.

Its nice because can give you some ideas as well of what brands you should go for, etc. It worth, I promise.

I wish you all the best for you, Tom and the Flercher comming!

  • Dear Gi,
I was quite sad to here that Marvin had passed :( I loved looking at the cute pics you posted of him :) and I know what it’s like to have pets die so suddenly :( On another note, it’s a shame you had to cancel Coriolanus, I saw it last night and it was absolutely amazing! (Tom Hiddleston was, of course, perfect <3)the whole show was brilliant and so emotional!

Hope you're having an awesome new year
