Happy New Year!

Hello! Hope you all had a lovely Christmas break, now we face a New Year, it’s time to get out with the old and in with the new! Rearrange and refresh your home with these quick and easy tips to ensure your rooms always look their best. By using accessories you can easily change the theme, look and feel of a room without having to resort to extreme redecorating.

celia1

A very simple way to glam up your room, which is also not going to break the bank is to invest in a good selection of silk flowers. Although I love the real thing, these do look really great and will last for a very long time! I made up this arrangement by using Deco Flora flowers- http://www.silkflowersdecoflora.co.uk/

celia2

Table top items are always great fun to buy and an easy way to change the look of your room.  A decorative box such as this one from Zara Home can funk up your coffee table or sideboard and is great value for money.

Update your sofa with this Smythson’s Cashmere Throw (£850) and Pillow (£295) set, the combination of luxurious greys will certainly keep you cosy, whether you throw this on your sofa or your bed

Brighten up your living room with Primrose and Plum’s Silver Twist Hurricane Lantern (£24) to bring some sparkle to your mantelpiece or side table. Add flowers or candles as a finishing touch!

Don’t want to get out of bed this January? Neither would I in this Ralph Lauren Home Cotton Tuxedo Duvet set. Just the thing to bring some sophistication to your bedroom and update it to the ultimate in style and chic!

I love candles and these Luminara Candles come in 3 sizes as you can see in the hurricane lamp on the coffee table. The best bit about these is that they are battery operated so you just switch them on and they flicker like a real flame but without a fire risk!

HOTEL LUXURY

I was wonderfully impressed with the hotel I stayed in, in Windsor recently. The Macdonald Windsor Hotel, www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk not only offered fantastic service but I was equally impressed with the brilliant use of space and luxury surroundings in the hotel.

celia12

The hotel used to be a retail store and has a very small entrance doorway through to a very long hallway down to the reception and bar, which is very cleverly designed to lead you almost as a runner, up the aisle to the reception desk and bar where excellent staff wait to greet you. The ambient lighting in this area really works and is very welcoming.

celia13

RECREATE THE LOOK

This is a fine example of how to make a long hallway or entrance inviting. Just because it runs in a straight line, the design has not been compromised and bringing in furniture of different heights and textures and ambient lighting, draws the eye to create interest. You can recreate this look at home by using contrasting level furniture, artwork and lighting, keeping the fabrics tonal but textural. This overhead floor light gives the same feel but for a fraction of the cost of some others on the market.

http://www.milandirect.co.uk/catalog/product/view/id/3123?gclid=CM7nx5HypLsCF fHMtAod9k0AMA

A good shaped armchair is a must and the Sofa and Chair Company have many options, http://www.thesofaandchair.co.uk/collection/chairs/2810-valera
Notice how the different levels of furniture add interest, this low cube could double up as a small table or be simply a footstool http://www.thesofaandchair.co.uk/collection/ottomans-cubes/2234-ono-cube.

Near the reception area is a contemporary fireplace, which draws a hub of people sitting cosily around it. Colour schemes are just great, with warm browns greys and gold (my favourites of course!)

celia14

RECREATE THE LOOK

Keep shapes cosy here, with sofas from Andrew Martin, loose covers can look comfortable and less formal by a contemporary fireplace http://www.andrewmartin.co.uk/cadogan-large-sofa.php
Give your walls a texture with a funky wallpaper, such as this one by Andrew Martin http://www.andrewmartin.co.uk/atlantis-wallpaper.php
Fabrics such as these Zinc Metallic weaves look super glamorous and the colours are fabulous http://www.zinctextile.com/collections/lens

Just around the corner is the restaurant, which is also decorated with lovely muted colours with banquet seating and separate chairs to invite comfortable seating, wood panelled walls and the layout is perfect for atmosphere. This room works both at night and daytime which is important when creating your eating space.

celia15

RECREATE THE LOOK IN YOUR KITCHEN/FAMILY ROOM

If you have the room its nice to incorporate different seating levels into your own kitchen/family space. It doesn’t need to look like a restaurant, but you can add smaller chairs with small sofas or mix your chairs to make the room a bit more casual in feel. Check out Kesterport who have top quality chairs of all shapes and sizes http://www.kesterport.co.uk/retail_chairs.html Leathers and faux suede are always great fabrics for these areas and can be cleaned fairly easily and I love this faux leather from Kravet, which looks glamorous but is still easy to clean http://search.kravet.com/Kravet-Vinyl/Acoustic.21- 400/CoverInformation.aspx

I had a fantastic stay at the Macdonald Windsor Hotel, which was not only down to the service and quality of the food and wine, but the hotel has a lovely quaintness yet still high end luxury feel which makes it a great recommendation from me. I will most certainly be going back, I cannot think of anything nicer than relaxing in the lovely bar by the fire with a fabulous glass of wine!

5* LUXURY

celia1

When I choose a hotel to visit, I am extremely fussy, not only down to the service given but because I have spent a great deal of time making the interior of my home as luxurious as the best 5 star hotel can possibly be. It can be a challenge to find the perfect combination of the two most important elements in a hotel, but this week I am going to share my experience of finding it, and how you can re create the look yourself at home!

I visited a beautiful hotel in the New Forest called The Chewton Glen www.chewtonglen.com and although the style of the room I stayed in (The Poachers Suite) was perhaps less contemporary than I would normally design, the room was faultless and pure luxury.

celia2

The suite itself was more classical in design, with contemporary fabrics and wall coverings. I love the panelled walls inside the bedroom and living room which gave a really warm cosy, and welcoming feel. The living room was stylish yet uncluttered, with textural and visual contrasts in wood, glass, velvet and linen. The room was extremely well balanced, with carefully thought out lighting throwing pools and washes of light into the room that create a sense of warmth and depth. Subtle floral wallpaper on one of the walls adds another dimension by contrasting with a more complex design, juxtaposing the overall design. In the room the furniture is a blend of eras and styles that form well together, the console table and its symmetry in the room making a statement

celia4

TIPS ON RE CREATING THE LOOK

Invest in a good sofa and get the same look with The Sofa And Chair Company

A very stylish, circa 1960s/70s, coffee table in Perspex, with a glass inserted top, – See more at: http://www.brownrigg-interiors.co.uk/antique-tables/antique- occasional-tables/1960s-perspex-and-glass-coffee-table-30-23-refno- 5191/#sthash.6Jp395eB.dpuf

Go for this Giacometti console table by Porta Romana which comes in various finishes.http://www.portaromana.co.uk/north-america/console-tables/cct01l- giacometti-console-table-large-versailles-gold-with-faux-limestone-top

Texture up your walls, even if it’s not with wood panelling to give the same cozy, warm feeling. There are lots of great wallpapers around, this Nobolis Nuage range is stunning http://www.nobilis.fr/collections/wallpapers-wall-coverings/mirages-n- 4/nuage-mir601

celia5

For a very different vibe but the same degree of luxury, there are tree house suites at the hotel. These are more contemporary in their design, keeping the warm nature inspired colours in the upholstery and finishes. The curved edges bring softness to the suites and add an organic effect. I love the imperfections or should I say perfections of natural wood, and the coffee table contrasting beautifully with the soft, neutral wool and linen rug.

The layout of the room is well thought out, with positioning of the furniture around the 2 main focal points in the suite. Comfortable seating to watch the television also sits well around the wood burner and the other positioned for the view outside and enjoying nature and the tree tops in view.
These suites give a very different vibe, seclusion in a luxury retreat if required but with all the service and quality of the main building.

TIPS ON RECREATING THE LOOK

Small tables for lamps, or ornaments such as this bout de canapé by Bleu nature is fabulous, with the natural wood inside. http://www.bleunature.com/fr/33-bout-de- canape-nilleq-.html
Curved sofas look stunning in the right room, this Laura Ashley sofa has the look http://mto.lauraashley.com/furniture/sofas/fabric/shape/300597-100626/large- curved-sofa?tmcampid=152&tmad=c&tmplaceref=300597- 100626&source=%7Bifpe:1%7D%7Bifpla:2%7D&gclid=CJWDndKJkbsCFfHMtAodBBY AAQ

Wood burners give that really warm focal point in the living room or dining room. Choose one of the more contemporary options http://www.stovax.com/stoves/contemporarystoves/contemporary_wood__multi_f uel.aspx

Keep your colours warm and natural and Jab offer some fantastic options for carpets and rugs in natural fibres http://www.jab-uk.co.uk/en/collections/carpets/Wall_to_wall_carpets/Natura2012/Natura2012.htm l

celia6

The 17m long spa pool is very impressionable with the walls painted in a ‘trompte d’oeil’ classical style.
Although this could be a bit elaborate for your home pool, you can add interest to your swimming pool walls, either by creating a wall mural, or for a more contemporary theme, go to Ed Chapman http://www.edchapman-mosaics.co.uk/ who works with mosaics to create you a wall of fame!

If you want a special Christmas treat or to treat someone special, I cannot recommend this hotel enough, it’s certainly in my top 3 of the World with luxury and service almost impossible to beat!

Enjoy!!!

Accessories for the season help transition your home for the winter. I am a great lover of candles and hurricane lamps, I always light them at dusk for that warm and cozy atmosphere.

Scented candles are really great for creating atmosphere in your room. Depending on your budget, go for either Gucci or Zara Home, they both smell gorgeous and look really stylish.

Look for lux, warm bedding, thin cotton is not great for winter and opt for comfier duvets with a higher tog to help you get some extra warmth at night. I like the White Company for bedding as they have a really good selection to choose from. http://www.thewhitecompany.com/home/bedroom/duvets-and-pillows/

Lovely Living Rooms

The living room is certainly the most enjoyable room to design. It is a very important room that really says a lot about how you want to be perceived by others. Living rooms are such fun to work on as they should be glamorous, interesting, comfortable and calming and be able to accommodate a variety of activities such as watching television with the family, chilling out after work or entertaining friends.

Seating is key in this room, and is one of the first things you should consider when designing in the space. I always use scale room plans for any design, but it is absolutely essential in this room as you will need to know how large to go with your seating.

Buying your sofa is key as it is the most important piece of furniture for your living room. It has to be the best quality you can buy as it will be used on such a regular basis and probably by many.

It is essential that you plan out your living room space carefully, not only so that you know how large your pieces of furniture should be, but also how the space will flow around your room.

Lovely living rooms 1

I wanted to create a modern yet warm environment in this large London home.

Rich, tactile fabrics such as a cross cut travertine for the fireplace surround suede, leather and velvet have been used to build up layers of warmth. The coffee table with a soft ribbed texture, in the same tone as the fireplace surround denotes a chemistry between the two.

Ox blood red fabric was introduced in the chaise and scatter cushions to give the room impact and interest against the ivory velvet fabric used on the sofa and chairs. I reversed the scheme on the chaise and throw to draw together the overall scheme.

See below on how we planned out the layout in this central London apartment, which clearly shows how much space you have to play with and how the room will flow around your furniture.

This Is How I Live My Life…

I always get up at 5am and go for a run, rain or shine! This is of course much tougher in the winter, but after my 5 mile run, I feel I can deal with any challenge that comes my way on a day-to-day basis. As soon as I arrive at the office, (my executive assistant Nadine brings in an essential Costa Coffee), I check all my mail from the night before, many clients live Internationally, so this is very important, then I have a brief meeting with the team regarding anything we may need to catch up on from the night before, just to make sure everything is running smoothly.

Days are always hectic and they vary a lot. 3 out of 5 days, I will be rushing to see clients. I have a chauffeur who collects me and drives me to my meetings, and often there are 4 or 5 clients to see a day, so whilst I’m in between journeys, I can make all my calls regarding the next meetings. Once I arrive at client’s homes, whether it is a major sports personality, a movie star or a business person, we run through their requirements, which takes about an hour or so. Meetings, whether with new or existing clients, all have the same time allocated as the rest of the day, I am usually back in my studio working with my team on various designs. The other 2 days are filled with shopping for items, talking to manufacturers either here or overseas, designing my furniture range and often organising any television work I am about to do, as well as keeping an eye on the goings on in my property development company and my new jewellery range design.

I have to make sure that I am in tune with new designs for my interiors. I go to as many trade shows as I can, Milan, Paris, London, Birmingham. I enjoy these as it’s very important to know what’s out there. I also allocate a few days a month to looking at up and coming designers, although I am lucky enough to be inundated with introductions. I like to go to schools and colleges to see what is happening as there is so much talent there.

a day in the life image 1

A typical day is up out and meetings with my high net worth clients. Once I have a brief of their requirements, I go back and start creating. This is my favourite part of the job. I love creating a great living space for people and I love creating my mood boards. It really gives a very strong direction on where we are going with the design and overall look of the project. I love finding gorgeous textures and hunt through my many books and samples to find lovely “touchy feely” things to include on my boards. I get great satisfaction out of working on these, and clients love them. I am currently working on a 25 million pound home, a very well-known footballers house, and a wealthy International business man’s pad in South West London amongst other private residential properties Nationally and Internationally, I am also working with a private aviation company to interior design their aircraft for clients. At lunch times I always attempt to do some weight training in the gym, although days are busy and I’ve already been for a run, it’s very important to me to balance cardio training with weights as it’s the best combination.

My evenings are varied, I love being with my children, cooking for them, and helping them with homework. I love watching a movie with them. I often have to go to Charity events, TV events, or parties with clients, but I make sure that the time I spend is as balanced as possible and really love putting them to bed at night and giving them the support they need by being there. I am usually in bed myself by 9pm if I am not out and about socialising, that way my batteries are recharged for the next day… I always think something exciting is about to happen tomorrow… and it normally does.

Come Dream With Me…

When I think of a bedroom, I think of romance, dreaming, luxurious fabrics and ones own personal sanctuary where they can escape and relax.

That’s why I love decorating bedrooms. You can be free and have fun with different textures, fabrics, styles and create an environment that’s completely personal to the owner. Whether that’s cool and minimalist, warm and cosy, full of exotic prints and pictures or even an Arabian fantasy…whichever direction you wish to go, you can. That’s one of the reasons why bedrooms are my absolute favourite rooms to decorate.

Decorating someone’s bedroom is a very personal thing as your bedroom should be your own sanctuary, especially designed to suit your personality. Some clients want a bedroom to chill out and watch TV in, some want them for romance, some to work in whilst others want them solely for sleeping in. Knowing the function of the room before you start is vital because without knowing this, it is unlikely that you will get the design to work for all of your needs.

Another important point to remember is: NEVER overlook your bedroom. I know that some clients have told me ‘…but nobody else will see it.’ YOU will see it and it is your place of well being and starting fresh for the day. It is also the room that you will spend most of your time in so make it feel special and pay it some attention.

The padded, leather wall in this master bedroom below is impressive. It was designed for a male client in his ultimate bachelor pad; hence the dark leather walls and masculine leather and steel bedside chests. It’s a stunning look and, although masculine, is also classic and extremely chic.

Top tip: To add that feminine touch, try adding some throw cushions with a more feminine pattern or colour, or a silky throw on the bed and some flowers to the bedside tables. They are small changes to the rooms design but will make a huge impact on the mood.

Come Dream With Me 1

Your Bed

Your bed is the main feature of the room and it is important to think carefully about what it’s purpose is in the room, and what your needs are regarding comfort. Is your priority a comfortable mattress? Do you love feather pillows?  Do you like a large headboard, such as the one in the previous image? An upholstered bed so that your upholstery matches, storage drawers? A four-poster bed? Colours, cushions and throws? Whatever your preference, as your bed is a dominant feature in the room, it needs to be given plenty of thought.

Come dream with me 2

In the image above, the client wanted their bedroom to have a monochrome feel, but with areas to sit, relax, and an area to work from. It’s a large room so it could easily accommodate these factors.

Come dream with me 3

I Love… This four-poster bed. The client wanted a simplistic but comfortable room and this bed provides just that. It’s stylish, simple, and adds the WOW-factor, to an otherwise simple room, dominating the room with its clean lines. Gorgeous!

Come dream with me 4

Throw-n To Switzerland

The thick pile, silk carpets and the fur details add a luxurious feel to this guest bedroom at a ski resort.

It’s important to remember when designing your guest bedrooms that this is where you can show off. I always love using great mirrors in bedrooms as it adds that glamorous feel and also makes a room look lighter, brighter and more spacious.

Lighting is another major factor for bedroom design. Ambient lighting from table lamps or wall lights are key and, if possible, make sure they are on a dimmer so that you can adjust your lighting to suit whatever you are doing at the time. I love a scattering of scented candles around the room on special occasions just to give it an extra sensuous feel.

Listen To Your Children

Children’s bedrooms are equally as important. I always suggest getting them involved in the design and, if they are old enough, to make mood boards of their ideas. You’ll be surprised how creative children can be with ideas, and it s a great way of making sure they get their own stamp on their very own sanctuary.

You’re My Wonderwall

When we think about decorating our homes, some of the first things that come to mind are flowers, furniture, accessories and artwork. These are all important factors; however it always amazes me that one of the most important factors is often given the least attention. Walls.

The walls of the house are like the spine. They exist throughout the house and are the backdrop to every room, acting like a blank canvas upon which we set the atmosphere of the room and showcase the accessories that make the room ‘lived in and loved.’

Have you ever heard the term ‘a house is not a home without people’? Well, as true as that is, the heart of the house cannot beat without walls.

Whether your walls are being used as backdrops for art or furniture or as a focal point, they should never be overlooked but instead embraced as a very important part of any design. I love creating surprises with walls, adding textures using fabrics, specialist plaster finishes or natural stone, and with such an array of choices these days you can really create something special.

Top Tip: I always suggest to my clients that they think carefully as to whether or not they will be displaying art on their walls or whether it will be a focal point so that we know how far we can go with the finish. I normally suggest walls are kept relatively plain if art is being displayed so that the art and the backdrop don’t fight against each other.

Wonderwall image 1

Leather Love and Natures Gifts

I love using leather on walls, and I’m a real fan of faux leather. Studies, libraries and even lifts look fantastic with leather walls. I love the simplicity in this private home with neutral, plastered walls and how the lift has a mix of cool, crisp chrome which contrasts beautifully with the warm burgundy leather.

Wonderwall image 2

As often as I can, I suggest natural stone for walls and floors. Gorgeous limestone always looks clean when used in bathrooms see how good it looks on walls, floors and counter-tops in this en suite bathroom. I love bathrooms to be very glamorous just like a luxury hotel bathroom should be, somewhere where you want to spend hours relaxing in the tub and there is nothing nicer than a clean smooth limestone clad onto the walls or large stylish slabs of marble.

Top Tip: When using neutral materials for your walls, use accessories to add colour and va va voom to the room. Classic walls never date and always look stylish so, by changing your accessories, you can easily change the tone of the room and add a modern feel without spending lots of money on a complete renovation.

Wonderwall image 3

Clear-ly Fabulous

Even though it seems a strange option, don’t over look using glass for your walls. These not only add a great deal of light into a darker room, but glass walls also make a great visual statement if you have architectural interest to look out to. See how this wall sets off this fabulous staircase which curves beautifully outside the room.

Subterranean Luxury Living Space

Over the last few years but more often now than ever before, many of my clients are requesting either an existing basement to become a luxury leisure zone or asking me to create one from scratch with the help of clever engineering. These subterranean areas can consist of a pool, steam and sauna rooms, a treatment room, a cinema room, a gym/dance studio and even a hairdressing room.

POOLS

Indoor swimming pools are probably the most common requirement from clients who are more limited with space and they are really fun to create. I enjoy using lighting such as these star lights below, to create different moods for different times of the day. I also insist on the best sound systems throughout, for boosting energy and for my clients’ relaxation purposes.

Subterranean 1

It is also important if you have space around your pool area, to add pieces of furniture, even if it’s only a few pool chairs. I like to create that luxury “spa” feeling at home. Whether it’s a refreshing swim in the morning before the day ahead or relaxing after a busy day, the pool area should fill you with the feeling of being on a luxury vacation, wonderful for your mind, body and soul.

HOME GYMS

Creating a good home gym space comes very naturally for me, probably because for years I have trained in gyms all over the world with varying degrees of standard. Some have been exceptionally small and sparsely kitted out, whilst others have been luxurious, large and exceptionally well equipped. You do not need a huge amount of equipment for a home gym, mainly clients require an all over general fitness regime and this could entail using a cycle or stepper, some free weights and a compact multi gym. I always use floor to ceiling mirrors in home gyms as it is important to watch how you perform your exercises and not cause injury. Mirrors also create that lovely feeling of light and space. A good sound system and a wall hung TV are also very important, and I do like adding a few small luxury touches, such as water bottles, some fresh fruit and neatly stacked towels to give it that extra bit of ‘wow’.

CINEMA ROOMS

Probably the most fun to create are cinema rooms. With these I can go a bit mad if the client allows! By that I mean that I love using interesting textures such as leathers and suede fabrics on walls, thick shag pile carpets and large deep filled sofas, full of cosy throws and cushions. I want my clients to feel that they just want to curl up and watch a great movie in complete luxury and comfort. A normal addition to this room is a drinks cabinet so that everything is “on tap”.  Home cinemas don’t have to necessarily be in a large area and it is important to choose a screen size to work well within the space you do have. Surround sound and air conditioning are a must for atmosphere and comfort.

CELIA’S INTERIOR STYLE FILE

-Dear Celia, I would really like to buy some crockery for my dining room which looks very expensive, but doesn’t cost much. I’ve looked in M&S and various other places but the selection is limited and not very impressive. Do you know where I can find something to give it that “expensive” look?

Yes, I always recommend Zara Home, as they do offer some great looking crockery for really good prices. These look very elegant and have very clean lines.

-Do you have any thoughts on what I can do with my husbands’ office? He’s so messy I can’t bear leaving the door open. I have a new Georgian house which is quite classical inside and have replaced the internal doors with high gloss walnut but am not sure what to do inside this room? It’s a large square room with lots of light but my husband insists that I keep it “manly”. THANK YOU!

It sounds like you have nice proportions to play with and good natural light so I would keep the room quite dark in colour which will make it look masculine for him. I like the use of chrome with dark chocolate leathers in offices. If you have the budget why don’t you get a joiner to build in some storage in the same finish as your doors? This will look stylish and you can utilize the good space you have to keep it nice and tidy.
