Q&A with Maternity Dress Designer, Tiffany Rose

Every bride wants to look their best on their wedding day, so finding the perfect dress is often their number one priority, off the record, of course. But what happens if you happen to be pregnant on your big day? I personally have been looking for a dress for quite some time now, and maybe this is because I haven’t been specially looking for a maternity dress, but I can honestly say that I haven’t once stumbled across a range of readily available dresses that specifically cater for brides with a bump. Sure, I’ve seen the occasional empire-lined dress, which would fit a pregnant bride (if she brought the gown three dress sizes up and then spent a fortune on alternation fees), but there really seems to be a shortage of maternity dress out there, especially for brides.

Tiffany Rose is a dress designer that I’ve come across that caters to that gap in the market. A designer of stunningly beautiful maternity dresses, British born, Tiffany has been creating gowns since 2003. Her dresses are favourites with celebrities including Spice Girl, Emma Bunton, Tess Daly and Holly Willoughby, and her extensive range of dresses, which are available in a huge range of styles, colours and fabrics, truly cater for women of all shapes, sizes and budgets;

What inspired you to set up your own label?

I was inspired by my pregnant sister who was struggling to find a dress to wear to her best friend’s wedding back in 2003. After entertaining the idea of my own business for a while and with an initial investment of just £1,000, I recognised there was a gap in the market for beautiful, high quality, maternity occasion wear.  I wanted to offer pregnant women the chance to look and feel fabulous at any occasion and at any stage of pregnancy.

What sets Tiffany Rose apart from other bridal designers?

Tiffany Rose dresses are designed to flatter brides at every stage of pregnancy. Our maternity bridal collection is timeless, classic, elegant and feminine. We design using very high quality, breathable fabrics with exquisite drape or embroidered lace detail.  We are passionate about creating the perfect fit for every single gown and we incorporate special tailoring techniques to ensure our brides feel comfortable and wonderful all day.  Because we design gowns to work for every stage of pregnancy, it means very little or no alterations are required which is unusual for traditional bridal retailers. Our bridal styles include full-length and knee-length maternity gowns in pure silk and premium jersey, embellished soft and stretchy lace wedding dresses, contemporary, fitted maternity gowns, understated chic maternity outfits for city brides and fabulous finishing touches like our maternity bolero jackets.

Describe a typical day at Tiffany Rose?

First thing in the day I grab a coffee and catch up with my assistant so I can take messages and answer any day-to-day queries. This can cover any part of the business, including customer services, dispatch, IT, manufacturing, PR and marketing.

After this we review the latest sales trends in combination with current stock levels so we can submit additional orders with our UK production team. This not only ensures a constant flow of business to our selected manufacturers, but it helps us maintain steady stock levels so we don’t disappoint our pregnant brides.

After this I’m straight into the design studio, receiving updates from the team, reviewing new fabric swatches that have been delivered, checking over new design samples and updating them with the latest press coverage we have achieved.

At some point in the day I always like to catch up with the Despatch and Customer Service teams, to make sure everything is going smoothly and to keep my hand in.

Then it’s time to sit down with our graphic designer who will be working on the latest new collection Bridal Look Book. We spend time selecting images from the latest photo-shoot and discussing layout for the Book.  As well as spending time in the design studio, I also really love graphic design.  It’s very exciting to see all the hard work on a photo-shoot come together and to see the results you envisaged.

Every day there’s always a few meetings, whether a fabric supplier visit, PR update, staff review meeting, celebrity fitting, new collection design brief or creative team brainstorm.

I try to leave the office mid afternoon so I can be with the kids after school, hear all about their day as well as ensuring the homework gets done! I really value that special time with them.

What would you say is the best part of your job?

There are a lot of good parts! I really enjoy building new collections with my team.

Fabric selection is key for us and so I am very passionate about sourcing new and high quality materials with beautiful finishes that work brilliantly for pregnancy. We love creating new designs and silhouettes to enhance pregnant curves and it’s hugely exciting when we discover new techniques and methods to ensure an even better and more flattering fit.

Do you have a signature style?

The Tiffany Rose hallmark that we have become known for is our classic, timeless styles, soft tailoring, beautiful sheen fabrics and most importantly our unique colour palettes.  Everything we design has to flatter – this is our passion, making pregnant women feel confident and gorgeous.

Apart from the obvious bump, what factors do you need to consider when designing gowns for pregnant brides? How important is fabric and fit?

Fabric selection is paramount. Before you even begin you need to understand how the fabric moves, drapes, gives and reacts, especially when you can be dressing a 4 month or 8 month bump.  But it’s not just growing bumps we have to consider, bra sizes and rib cages are also expanding.  So this is where the right fabric combined with careful and considered tailoring comes into its own.

Have any celebrities worn any of your gowns?

We have been very lucky to dress a large number of celebrities for very glamorous and formal occasions. Most recently, Melissa George at the Angel Charity Ball in New York, Princess Madeleine of Sweden at Queen Silvia’s 70th birthday and Naiyana Garth who attended the Golden Globe Awards with her partner, Idris Elba, who was nominated for Mandela. We’re also thrilled to hear Kate Silverton’s news – she’s a very special client of ours from her first pregnancy!

What price do your designs start at?

Pieces in our bridal collection start from £69.00.

Which celebrity would you like to design a wedding dress for and why?

Anne Hathaway (but alas she is married!) and Scarlet Johannson.  Both of them have lovely curvy figures and an individual style. They would look stunning in a vintage-style wedding gown with elegant lace detail, soft lines, beautiful drape and contrasting texture.
