In the beginning

I have always known that I wanted to be a mother.

I suppose more than most I am aware of the importance of family, and it’s been a dream of mine to have one of my own.

Last July I married my (very) long-term boyfriend Chris, and seven months later we found out we were expecting a baby.

I am now five and a half months along with an ever-growing bump to show for it. And I have never been happier.

That said, the first three months were awful. Really awful.

Morning sickness, check. Daily migraines, check. And the tiredness – no one really talks about the total exhaustion you feel at the start. By the end of work at six, I could barely keep my eyes open; I had my PJs on by seven and would be nodding off on the sofa by eight (and that was on a good day).

We had also decided not to tell anyone until we were given the three month ‘all-clear’ scan, so I did my best to carry on as normal. The real low came the day of the royal wedding when we worked 16 hours straight – I walked through the front door at midnight, and burst into tears.

But just like that it all stopped. Around the week 14 mark, the nausea, the headaches and the tiredness all went away. And my little bump finally started to make an appearance.

Everyone says that the second trimester is the best – and they are right. I am not suffering with any side-effects and aside from my tummy, – which now gets me seats on the metro – I don’t have obvious tell-tale signs.

But in just four months Chris and I will become very proud parents to our first baby. And I just can’t wait to meet him.
