A few weeks ago I went on a site tour of the new Westfields shopping centre at Stratford and I have to say, I was pretty impressed! Check me out in my safety gear. Super chic??!
I actually quite like the boots but I’m not sure ‘hivis’ is my colour!
It’s a pretty incredible site. The development has had £1.45 billion invested into it and it comprises 1.9 million sq ft of retail and leisure space. It also has 1.1 million sq ft of office space and three hotels.
With 300 retailers, a 17 screen, all-digital, state of the art Vue cinema, an Aspers casino, a 14 lane All Star Lanes bowling alley, and more than 70 places to eat and drink, it will be the largest urban retail and leisure destination in Europe. Kind of mind blowing!! Or alternatively described as ‘heaven’!!
Even whilst construction was going on, it had a wonderful open feel, thanks to its pillar-less design and the largest pane of glass used in a retail development in the UK. It was easy to visualise hours of paradisal shopping.
Here are the Westfield Stratford City features that make it stand out for me…
- Views of the Olympic Park
- ‘The Street’ which gives you the outdoor shopping and dining experience
- Free Wi-Fi access and boosted mobile phone 3G signal
- Parking Guidance, and Find My Car Technology
- Best connected shopping centre in the country
- Shops, shops and more shops (oh and restaurants etc etc etc) click here to see who will be there
It was amazing to see Stratford looking like that. I grew up in Leytonstone and used to hop on the tube to go to Stratford’s teeny tiny shopping centre. It is literally like a whole other world now. There have been 27,000 new jobs throughout construction, 10,ooo permanent jobs upon opening, 2,000 of which will go to the long-term unemployed.
I really think it will great and there isn’t long to wait. Westfields Stratford City will welcome its first visitors on 13th September 2011. Exciting!
And you have to check out this amazing short video celebrating 100 years of East London style in 100 seconds. It is completely brilliant.
